Hi everyone, i have been following this site for some time now and figure it would be a good place to post this question.

i have a 1992 putz 2040 and about a week ago i noticed when pumping i was getting a howling noise coming from the cylinders so i took it to the shop and they recommended draining my hydro fluid and changing the filter they said it was contaminated with water,at that time i also had them check my accumulator and recharge it,after all this was done it still made the same sound so i thought it has to be mud cups or hydro pump.so last night i went ahead and pulled the mud cups and they look worn out. figured this has to be whats causing it to howl, but with no mud cups in it i cycle the pump and it still makes the same noise.i had a hydraulic shop listen to the pump and they told me its not the pump itself its something else. it sounds as if it might be coming from on top of the hydraulic tank as there is a little bit of hydro fluid leaking from one of the hydraulic stacks.any ideas as to what would cause this noise? i can post pictures of whatever would make this easier.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

thank you

Check the outlet seal at the rear of the hopper, when the outlet seal is dry or worn you will hear a noise that appears to come from the cylinder area, as the noise travels down the S-tube.

thanks for the reply, would it be the outlet seal  if there is no mud cups or mud in the hopper?

i'll try to post a video of it running in the next couple days.

thanks

Hey guys just an update on the 2040 putz

i took it to another pump mechanic he said the bearing on the input shaft inside the hydro pump or the shaft itself  is what is making the noise, is this hard to replace by itself or do i have to rebuild the whole pump?

thanks again

Depending of the age of the pump, a rebuild may not be a bad idea. if you dont have the neccesary tools to work on the pump, take it to a hydraulic shop, they should be able to help you.
