Hey so what's the difference I've heard guys say rod pressure and piston pressure on the material cylinders. I've got a valve on my 38r alliance on the top of the rams on the drivers side that goes to the top of the two rams. What is this for ?

If pressurized oil is plumbed from the bottom, rod side is being used. The rod side is used for high volume pumping. If pressure oil is plumbed to the top of the main cylinders, the head side is being used. The oil will be the same pressure as the rod side, but without the cylinder rod in the way,the pressure oil has a larger surface area to apply pressure.head side is used for high pressure pumping with lower volume. The lever is probably some kind of cylinder lock.Try it ,see what it does....

So how do you know what your plummed for high volume or high pressure.

Look at the main cylinders from the water box toward the front of the truck,if the loop is on the bottom,it is plumbed for high pressure,if the loop is on the top,it is plumbed for high volume

Most pumps are not easy to tell if they are plumbed to rod side or piston side. It also takes a bit of effort on most pumps to change them from one to the other by changing the routing of hydralic lines and sometimes changing them to a longer length to connect them. One important thing to remember is that if you change to high pressure, you will be pumping at a higher pressure than your boom pipe and clamps are rated for. You could get into trouble if you blow something apart and hurt someone if pumping on the high pressure side of your pump if someone knows what they are looking for. I have seen a few Korean pumps with just a simple switch that changes the pump from high volume to high pressure and I don't think that is a good idea. If you are having trouble with a mix, the last thing I want is an operator taking it upon themselves to put people in danger by flipping a switch.

Greyslayer,

The difference between pistion and rod side:

Piston side: more surface area =more pressure less output volume

Rod side: less surface area = less pressure more output volume, im assuming your Alliance pump is a JXR38-4.16 : The 16 means 160 m3/hr output. which is set up on rod side.

Piston side on this unit is not reccomeneded to be pumped through the boom because the concrete pressure exceeds the pressure rating of the pipe.

The lever on the top left of your driver side pumping ram is used for changing piston cups and the proceedure to do this can be found in you Pump manual and in the Alliance Concrete Pumps 2015 parts Catolouge.
