Latest Developments in the Concrete Pumping Industry
The concrete pumping industry is witnessing significant advancements, driven by innovative technologies and enhanced safety protocols. Here’s a comprehensive look at the key updates and developments shaping the industry.
ACPA’s Operations Safety & Maintenance Conference
In October, the American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA) hosted its biennial Operations Safety & Maintenance (OSM) Conference near Austin, Texas. The event brought together over 200 industry professionals, including concrete pumpers, manufacturers, distributors, and safety experts. The conference showcased the latest advancements in concrete pumping equipment and highlighted crucial safety measures to ensure a safer and more efficient working environment[1].
New Appointments and Hires
Putzmeister America, Inc. has announced the addition of Michael Dockery as a territory sales representative. With a background in heavy equipment sales, including new and used trucks in the Pacific Northwest and parts and service sales for 13 western states, Michael will focus on large line sales in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington[1].
Beton America LLC has welcomed James Rogers as the new director of sales. James brings nearly 15 years of experience in the concrete pumping industry, with roles in sales, financing, and management of both pumps and parts. His expertise will be pivotal in driving Beton America’s sales strategies forward[1].
Regulatory Changes in Texas
As of October 23, 2024, the State of Texas eliminated the exemption from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements for concrete pumps operating exclusively in Texas. The Texas State Highway Patrol has issued a 90-day warning period for the implementation of these new concrete pump requirements. By January 21, 2025, all concrete pumps operating in Texas must obtain a USDOT number and comply with FMCSA regulations, including Hours of Service, medical standards, and driver record-keeping using ELDs[1].
Enhancing Industry Training and Safety
The American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA) is committed to building a more educated and safer workforce in the concrete pumping industry. Two significant initiatives are underway to improve training and safety:
ACPA University (Online Learning Platform): ACPA is set to launch an online learning management system called ACPA University, which will provide industry-leading education. The platform will offer skills training, virtual reality solutions, and e-learning modules. The ACPA executive director, Christi Collins, emphasized the platform’s ability to consolidate learning resources under one dashboard, enhancing efficiency for both members and ACPA staff. An ACPA operator onboarding course will be introduced to significantly benefit its members[3].
Coworker Safety Training Program: ACPA is collaborating with the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) to develop the Coworker Safety Training program. This initiative aims to educate end users of concrete pumps about safety practices related to working with or around pumps. The program is scheduled to launch in Spring 2024, addressing the critical need for safety training among finishers and hose handlers, who often face high risks on job sites[3].
These developments highlight the industry's commitment to safety, education, and innovation, ensuring that concrete pumping remains a reliable and efficient process in construction projects.
