1" mix packing up in hopper?

I run a small line pump, and I pumped about 20 or so yards the other day of a "supposed" 1" 6sk mix. The first load kept packing up in my hopper and it wouldn't even suck into my valve. I dug out the rocks, gave the load a drink, and threw in a couple slick packs. Still wouldn't pump smooth, so i had the rm driver let the hopper run low before he added more. Pumped fine the rest of load and the 2nd no prob? I don't have an agitator, and was wondering if this would have helped feed my valve? Only had 2 small plug ups in the line over 20 yds, cleared quickly and back to pumping. Oh, I was told it was going to be a 3/4" pump mix, and came prepared for that. Started out with my 3" then down to 2.5" for the last 50' or so. I was skeptical about the mix, so I asked to see the rm ticket, sure enough 1" mix. Like I said only 2 plugs, main prob was in hopper. 1" mix through a 2.5" line? I did not think that would happen, but job done, all are happy.

first off whta kind of pump are your running, ball seat-swing tube, and size of concrete cylinders? what area of the country are you in? and what type of mix are you using other than 1"? in other words amount of stone sand cement fly ash etc.
