Myself & the other operator were supposed to get this ready to pump concrete. It was to be placed on a barge for the south street bridge project in Philly PA. It was our #1 priority but now it just sits there I guess they don't need it that bad good thing that would have been a pain in the a**. Although after working on it for about a day we got it to stroke a few times then the elec. system took a sh** must have been the huge mouse nest we found in the panel |

whoa mudcup, that 76 cifa is still pumping ? Or is the electrical system to far gone ? To be honest Im just alittle shocked that pump would be set up on a barge in the Philly area and "trusted" to get the job done at all,I would think the union there would not allow it ? But i could be wrong,if nothing else get a current boom inspection on it if it does not have one yet just to cover your ass and the owner of your company incase of a boom failure . aww man I think your just pulling our leg on this one ? LOL |

B.I. : You've got to be pulling our leg! The first pic is of a Thompsen 845. And there are many of their series still in operation around the world. Dinosaurs, yes, but unsafe, I dont think so! |

I remember seeing a Thomsen like that on a water treatment plant pouring walls. I was a mixer driver and was probably 20 at the time. That was a big pump then. |

I gotta tell ya...If I am a contractor and you roll up on my job in that old thomp. I am callin some one else,Turn it around and take it back to the yard |

Boom Inspector | 12-18-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
Not really Mudslinger, like who??? just said ,most contractors would feel the same as what he just said. There is a time for this equipment to retire isnt there ? There may be some late 70's model cifa's still in use but mainly not in america would be my guess. lol I dont know that for a fact , I just cant understand why some one would even want to use iron that old with out antique plates on the thing. Unless it was totally refurbished from top to bottomn and performed like new. I guess my opinion would be about the same as my personal vehicle, I sure as heck would not want to drive a 30 plus year old vehicle any more than I would want to pump with one is basically all im saying(some exceptions do apply IE: 55 chevy) But each to there own on this subject, I just like new technology vs old school stuff. But if nothing else , that picture of the cifa is still interesting enough all by itself and it was fun looking at the photo. |

my bad, I meant to call it a 1976 Thomson, not a cifa |

Your problem might be you're trying to service a 700 series Thomsen (745) with an 800 series manual. If you're seriously wanting to get it up amd running I know someone who knows them backward and forward. |

Elvis441 | 12-18-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
BTW 800 series Thomsens had independent 3208 CAT engines for the pump (845, 847, 874, 875). This one does not appear to have one. Likely Model 745. |

Mudslinger | 12-19-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
Hey Elvis! It has the Cat! It's just mounted different than the later 800 series! Sunstrand pump was in the back! Knowledge I will probably NEVER use again, but it's nice to know I still have a few cylinders firing! |

Mudslinger | 12-19-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
BTW B.I.: That substructure, and boom probably has fewer flaws now than alot of current equipment! I spent years working with them, and although I would not want to run one now,I think they were well engineered!!! Thank You Joe Schmidt!!! |
