Something went wrong in Lewisville texas this morning around 5:15 am. I have heard from a few different people from the jobsite. A schwing 52m boom had a failure and came down on 4 finishers. Two of the men were killed and two were injured. The two injured were taken to local hospitals with injuries to their lower extremities. There is a small article in the Dallas morning news website. |

LEWISVILLE, Texas — An equipment accident at an under-construction park-and-ride transit site in the Dallas area left two workers dead and two injured. Denton County Transportation Authority president James Cline says construction will be suspended at the Lewisville site as long as necessary during the investigation into Thursday's deadly accident. DCTA spokesperson Dee Leggett says the boom on a concrete pumping truck collapsed onto the four workers. Leggett says the two injured workers suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to hospitals. Their names and conditions were not immediately released. Names of the two workers who died also were not immediately available. The accident happened around 5:15 a.m. Thursday in Lewisville, about 20 miles northwest of Dallas. |

Do you Todd have any details as to what happened to the boom? Looks like an older Pumpco pump, color wise. Really hope they were up to date on thier inspections. Say a prayer for the ones who didn't make it. So sorry for thier loss. |

Sorry for the people involved. What a bad luck with so many people hurt. Makes you think. One of my best friends had his 52 schwing collapse just last month. Luckaly nobody got hurt. It must be hard to live with an outcome like this. My thoughts go out to the operator as well. |

Todd this may hit a little close to home it is Central Concrete Pumping out of Ft. Texas. I am a former employee and operator of that pump. The pump is a Schwing 52z 5 section. As for the inspection yes they are up to date with all the pumps. The operator had already been pumping for about 5 hrs he was stretched out and it snapped near the turret. This is a top notch company there pumps are inspected every year per Schwing. I worked for CCP for 10yrs. |

hey bigstick, I ain't sure but I don't think it was an old Pumpco machine. I remember when they got this one and I'm thinking it was new. bad deal all the way around...all the boys at Central are good people and skilled. |
||
bigstick | 06-24-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Never in twenty years of pumping seen a Schwing pump break like that one did. So sad, I guess any machine can fail eventually. I feel so bad for the people who we lost, but also feel very bad for the operator who has to try to sleep after this unfortunate accident. If anybody knows him tell him he has the support of about 5000 operators worldwide. Tell him sometimes bad things happen to good people. It wasn't his fault. |

Thanks bigstick I will relay the message. There is word out that this has happened to a few 52's. Hope Schwing can pin down the problem and there no more to come. I wish I could put in words how top notch CCP is to work for and how they keep up with their equipment. |

I heard this news early this morning ,it is extremely upsetting that this happened. Im almost %100 sure this company runs a tight ship and there boom inspections are up to date. But and this is a BIG BUT, if what happened is in the area of the boom I think it is , no boom inspector could have caught this issue.You cant inspect what you can visually see. My deepest sympathies go out to these men and there families,this is a tragic loss for all involved.

Guys, I drove by the jobsite about 20 minutes ago. The site is about 1.5 miles from the house. Total carnage. Hardhats laying in the mud next to the boom. What a scary and sad sight. I will have trouble sleeping tonight after seeing something like that. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone involved. The salesman that was on the job this morning said they had been pumping for hours with no problems. All of a sudden he and the operator heard a very loud bang and looked back and the boom was laying on the finishers. What a sad day for this industry. |
||

Lets not turn this into bash a company, sany sucks post. ALL machines, at one time or another will fail. We had two people die today, maybe a father, or a husband or son. Pray for them and thier families. If you have a problem with a certain pump manufacture, then guess what, DONT BUY THE DAMN THING.] Sorry for the rant, just pissed off two guys lost thier lives today and people want to bash a company.] Imagine this poor guy that was running this pump today? Do you really think he gives a shit who made the pump? |
||
"THE HAMMER" | 06-24-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Just to let you all know, I was not bashing any manufacturer. I have run Schwin, Putz, Sermac, and I am now running a Sany. They will all fail at some point in time, whether it is on the job or at the yard, or somewhere else. Just remember what happened today and keep everyone involved in thoughts and prayers. |
||
Concrete Gypsy | 06-24-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
I don't see this turning into this manufacture sucks. What's sucks is to people lost there lives today trying to make a living. And an operator has this on his mind. I hope everyone learns from this and goes to work each day trying to do this safely so we can get home every day.
Shrek52 I use to work for Mel and Carl almost 12 years ago. I hate to see this happen to them. But I remember back when CPI was around they had there accidents too. |

I also drove by. It doesn't put things into perspective until you see one of those Goliaths laid out like that. A very sad sight in deed for all involved. Seeing this takes the adventurer out of me as a owner/operator to take a big step to get into the boom side of the industry. |

jj707 | 06-25-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
At one time I did a little welding testing and x-ray and ultrasound or UT , my question is shouldnt these components that see this much weight and load be checked by other means than just what the eye can see, I know some of these accidents cant be blamed on anyone or any company in particular , just thinking maybe its our industry standards that need to be given a overhaul and these monster machines that see alot of metal fatigue be given more than a look see , with whats at stake seems as though some kind of standard should be set, I will be praying for the families that lost loved ones and for this operator that will live with this tragedy forever. |
||
jj707 | 06-25-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
lets leave Sany out of this lets make this about getting this fixed, The Sany word seems to get alot of people in trouble here so we'll talk about that another day, today lets just pray for the victims and the operator. |

like jj707 view and how this brings "awareness" to insurance, bankers and politics. do you boomers want to control this industry or let president owama pencil up a happiness bill shuting down everything over 42M until the magic point in time. hate to be an A-hole but get the clue. |
||
Boom Inspector | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
jj707 ,you have some great points. Only problem I see being an Inspector myself is that owners would be unwilling to pay for that kind of service. Unless it was federally mandated and each pump owner had to do the same inspection to keep everyone on the same business expense. And then the only way it could work is each state would have to have an inspection center that each pump would have to drive to as most owners would not have the facility to tear down a boom and inspect each component then reassemble it. For the most part Inspectors in America catch a tremendous amount of problems and are able to repair them on location and are recognized by the manufactures to do the job right. We have a good system in place that is cost effective for owners and as we all know catastrauphic accidents are rare in our industry. Our industry would be worse off with out what is established right now. But yes there is room for improvements for all owners and manufactures and inspections. |

When something like this occurs in the aviation industry, the FAA, or the manufacturer issues a bulletin to all owners regarding the suspect part, or even issues an order grounding the aircraft in question. Granted, there are actually more lives at stake in the case of aircraft, and it is most definitely more tightly regulated. Has Schwing (America or Germany) analyzed the part to determine the root cause? |
||
Dipstick | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Shouldn't we just wait untill they find out what was wrong (which they HAVE to) Before we jump conclusions? We really don't know anything yet (do we??) |
||
Todd Jr | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Schwing immediately called all owners of 52SX pumps and grounded them until further investigation. Schwing also immediately dispatched personal to the scene. Our prayers go out to all involved in this unfortunate incident. |

pumpjockey | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
So, Todd Jr. did Schwing just limit it to the 52's? What about the other sizes of pumps that use that same mechanism? Especially longer booms? |
||
Dipstick | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Is this only the 5 section 52sx or also the 4 section? |
||
Todd Jr | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Yes it is only the 5 section 52SX booms that are shut down. |
||
pumpjockey | 06-28-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Ken, please keep us abreast of the progress on this investigation. Is Schwing planning a visit to inspect your machine(s) with the questionable component? I wonder if if might be wise to remove it and have it Maganafluxed, or perhaps Schwing will issue a stronger replacement piece? |
||
Todd Jr | 06-29-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Schwing will be dispatching people to inspect all of the 52SX machines once the cause has been determined and all neccesary components will be replaced or repaired. These machines will remain out of service until then. |

Todd, this accident happened about 2 miles from my house. I have been driving by and keeping up with what's going on at that jobsite. I have close to 50 pictures. I'm going to try to get over there while the manufacturer is there disassembling the boom and get a fee more pics. If your are interested in these pics, let me know and I can email them to you.
Thanks,
Matt |
