I recently purchased one. For 50 bucks why not! Sometime it may just save the day. Has any one used one of these before?

We use an old pipe cut into thirds and a couple of hose clamps with that good old duck tape works good on those big holes 3" to 6" in size temp fix

a can rapped arround the hole with duck tape and 5 inch clamps placed right where the hole is are a better deal then the hose clamps.

They gave us exhaust pipe clamps.  Hope I don't have to use them.

My fav' is a split 3 foot piece of pipe and three adjustable clamps; Con Form ... and you MUST have duct tape. ;~)

Hose clamps/muffler bands are too slow. With the adjustable clamps you can really reef down a bit at a time and get a tight patch. The duct tape is to tie-up the sup't.

I use the plumbing repair kit for waste lines. It is rubber on the inside, steel on the outside and, I smash a pop can inbetween. But thatfully I dont have blow outs much, except for the occassional tip 90.

I think officially, we'd rather see the pipe get changed out before it comes to needing these approaches (in a 'perfect world', which we have never been able to achieve...yet anyway).

There's nobody more resourceful than an operator itchin' to get the job done.  Just be careful with this stuff 'cause it can come back to bite you in the back of the knee (or a little higher than that if you know what I mean).

It's hard to relate safety into this subject Mr. Bob!

Happy New Year all & be safe anyway!

Speaking of tip 90's, here's a tip for you guys using cast manganese elbows (otherwise called cast elbows & the like).

Next time you blow out your tip (or 'impact') elbow (2nd-to-the-last boom tip elbow), replace it with a used one with life still left in it from another location on the boom & put the 'new' elbow in the location you got the used elbow from.  The manganese allows the material these elbows are made to 'work-harden' & a used elbow will outlast a 'new' cast elbow in this location on a boom significantly.

You may not even need to rotate the elbows on the boom 'cause most of you have 'used' cast elbows laying all around the yard anyway.  Unless your scrap man hasn't caught on to the manganese elbows you've been slipping him with your 'real' steel scrap.  Just be sure you pick one that still have some 'reasonable' life left to it.

Sounds goofy, but it is the truth!

Tom hit on a subject that's very real. The old pipe and elbows (servicable ones) should always be saved in the yard. The highest wearing elbow on your boom is the tip catcher. We all know how those pesky swivel gaskets are,so check those 2 elbows alot.I guess for the rest of your boom,I'm old school.I would rotate and flip, caught alot of flack but I hated being caught with my pants down unprepared.
