I had a big ATTABOY I wanted to share with you all.

We have a relatively new trailer pump operator whose name is Anthony Folson. I use his name so that everyone knows what a champ this young man is. He operates a TK-40 and uses 2 ½ gear.

He arrived on a job where the pour was a short 20 foot high wall. The contractor was planning to have his placement crew hang onto the hose and be raised-up to the top of the wall on a forklift. The plan was for one guy to hold the hose while standing on one fork while the other fellow distributed the concrete while standing on the other fork. Anthony recognized this program as a potential for disaster and called in. He did not make a big deal out of it with the contractor, he just called in.

I know from past experience that 9.9 out of 10 ‘new-guy’ operators would have just done it; the ATTABOY is for knowing the difference between a POUR THAT CAN BE DONE  and a POUR THAT SHOULD BE DONE.

Some of the advice he was given at the time was:

1.              Prime out the system on the ground before rising to the height of the pour.

2.              Securely tie the system to the forklift so that no one is supporting the weight of the system.

3.              Request that the contractor provide fall protection to his placing crew.

4.              Make sure that the signals were understood by everyone involved.

·       BEFORE ANY CONCRETE WAS PUT IN THE MACHINE. HAVE THE CONTRACTOR ACTUALLY READ THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE TICKET, AND SIGN IN THE PROVIDED SPOT…… that he had read, and understands the terms and conditions.

After relaying all of this information to the contractor he decided that the pour was too dangerous to make in that manner.

To have a young operator see that the exposure to his company was not worth the value of the ticket is priceless.

That is what being a professional concrete pump operator is all about.

Thanks Mr. Anthony Folson!!!
