This boom was made by well meaning people that did not have the first clue as to how to manufacture a boom joint or pin bushing that could be properly lubricated. If you decide to stand under this boom you are really a risk taker. |

I really love those old 3900s. Houston 1978 or 79 we had a pile of them and they went out every day and poured it out. On many a Saturday after all the pours were over we 'convoyed' to one job or another and set them all up. Saturday night was spent filling a large hole in the ground with concrete. It was a unique "Texas" way to spend Saturday night and Sunday. We did that more than a few times. After the pour, on Sunday, we would do whatever it took to get them ready for Monday morning. Those old Titans proved themselves worthy week after week, month after month... SOS-DD. Those old raggass machines went head to head with 800 & 801 28m Schwings that the competition owned and operated. The giant difference in the two machines was that the old 800s are still pouring it out and most of the old Titans...... well, they didn't stand the test of time quite as well. Old |

Haha love the overhang!! im guessing it had the armstrong front outriggers, dont try and open up on a hill lol , one one the first pumps i ever worked on had legs like that.. What fun it was a little putz 28 z i think its still working , i dont think it will ever stop!! |

As I remember they got a better yds per hr than the 800-801's to boot.I seem to remember the wear parts didn't fair as well.Then enter the elba and you could pour close to the truck,mmm.Those early days in Houston was a learning curve for many of us. |

That's not history that's my life.I put many yards through a titan while sitting on the counterwieght. Look out for the little key in the swing motor they been known to break letting the boom free spin. TT thanks for the picture, I'm trying to get some of the old pumps I've ran. Need Thompsen 720 and up, 36 meter Elba, and Schwing older trailer and boom pumps. Bob what was the Thompsen that the second section was hinged to the side and you had to swing it around with a rope then clamp up the pipe? |

I remember Les had one mounted on a army 6x6,yuk.Man was that a long time ago.Elba also had a swing away jib on the tip section,the one I was familar with was Pumpco unit #49. |

Many, Is this the Elba you were thinking of? 31m/33m with a 2m hinged extention, it was cool because you could crack it open to suck a ball, wash out the whip and reducer and fold up! I dont know where it came from but it was mounted on a Brigadere General with a scream'n detroit and a 13 speed behind it! What a hot rodd? |

rascal, Here's a thirty six meter Elba with a Schwing 901 gate valve pump kit and to add to the cunfusion it was wired with a Titan remote box (toggle switches)!!! This was my very first boom, I recall spending my 20th birthday rapping on the deck pipe praying to hear the sound of ..ding dING DING!.. "Church Bells"! ..... |

After looking at those pics I realize how good those pumps were considering they were old when I ran them and these pix were sixteen years ago. Elba pumps were way ahead of their time. Look at todays popular pump kits and the hopper and valve designs? Elba was doing it 30 years ago. |

I built the control housing and "Swelba" stuff for it. Pumpco Atlanta spent a bunch of time with a couple of those and really did a good job with them. The smartest fix was throwing the Elba cast boom control block away and using Putz style controls. Those were better pumps at age 20 than the day they were new. We even cut down Schwing material cylinders to fit in the Elba waterbox . Good memories and good pumps. ;~) |

yes,that was the one bob.TT the 3900 I ran in the mountains (90') was on a Brig,the 318 road oiler and 13 spd,you could really hear that power "not". As I recall the original "pumpco" had the nicest paint around (custom).I believe they were in the nw before moving to hotlanta and being bought by it's current owner. |
