Adding water during a load

You're pumping concrete and the crew asks for more water in it.  You stop, let the mixer driver add his water, and then start pumping.  Immediately the crew start raising their hands asking for the water.  What they don't realize is that it hasn't made it's way through the pump yet. Not a major problem by any means, but it just gets annoying to me day after day.  Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, everyone has the same problem.

Tell the driver to spin the drum for a min or two & then pour it out. ;~)

I love it when they ask for water. You shut the pump off, The mixer driver gives it a drink. The second you turn the pump back on they are like, that is way better!! I just chuckle!

or how about the "know it all contractor", that after you tell him it takes about 7 stokes to see the results of the water added, he then says "put 20 gallons in it anyway", then it becomes to wet and then he gets upset....lol.  Then it is too wet and he wants to stop the pump and expect the mud to stop flowing immediately, and he can't understand while its still flowing out the end hose.....

Ya know it's funny that people can't understand. Going from pumping 20+ to placing some things i do amazes some finishers. I use delvo on 95% of my summer work. I use fiber alot but when pouring 60 min + from plant I use wire + delvo.I sometimes exceed 2% per yard, allowing to place residential work to comm spec's.But then you bid the work and forget to read the spec's,so sorry.

BEST ONE I EVER HEARD WAS  COUNTY BUILDING INSPECTOR TELLING THE HOME OWNER ON A ADDITION "YOU HAVE TO WATCH THESE CONCRETE GUYS THEY'LL ALL 10 OR 15 GALLONS SO THEY CAN GET A EXTRA YARD OUT OF THE TRUCK"........  BOY GLAD HE WAS AROUND TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT..

Really true, have heard that before.Stupidity runs rampant. If that inspector happend to go in the basement on a 100 degree day he just might come out on the well done side.

John, once learned a crew can dial in a set time for the concrete.I pour up to 45 miles east of denver and at these temps it and flyash plays a very important part of a good placement and finished product.I have 4 exterior mixes I use from 10% to 18% flyash, depending on application and distance. What does this translate to pump?.Alot less stress on operator at 90+ degress.Batched at 5" the load will hold it's slump, less water in concrete.

some people are just retards !!!!!  all you have to do is just let them be and enjoy the show.

But you missed the best ones!!How about the driver who thinks he's empty, puts 10 gallons of water in his drum, and then backflushes about a quarter yard into the pump! It got as far as the turret 90,and seperated! They had to hold me off of him .Then when he comes back I overhear him call me an asshole to another driver! They grabbed me again!!!

Always makes me laugh, customer wants his mud wetter. Says to add 5 or 7 gallons to 9 yards. I tell them, probably need at least 20 to get what your after, "response...oh no 20 is way to much", they proceed to add 5 to 7 gals about 6 times in a row...time is money, and I am not cheap, just trying to help, but what do i know i am just "the pump guy".

Personally I agree with them.It was puckering me up anyway to be pumping that 5000 psi mix up ten floors anyway. As long as it dont get outa hand I just sigh relief when it comes swishing outa that hose.If they bitch about it being to wet I tell them "Man,you done it now".

Ive allways liked the finishers who tell you to stop the pump."Pumpman put 20 gallons in it." I look them dead in the eye and say "Go ahead they can hear you down there just as good as they can hear me."After standing around scratching there arse for a minute they tell you go ahead turn it back on.My reply is allways the same"Thats what I thought you would say."

Told a driver to put ten gallons in 5 yds of concrete. He put ten gallons and a ten yard shot of plastercizer in it.I was down in a hole and couldnt see the mud.Dont need to tell you how that worked out.It pumped till I stopped.

Stupid people should not be allowed to breed or deal with concrete.
