am i wrong in saying that puting tip section of boom in forbidden position(past 90 degrees) poses the same danger as shortlegging.if so why do scwhing just rely on operator simply not to put it in such a position rather then employing a failsafe mechanism as they have with EASy for shortlegging.

I suspect, reason why this is forbidden, is because the stress caused by the last stage on the first stage hydraulic cylinder is enough to run the risk of stripping the threads of the end cap which will cause the rod to pop out off the 1st stage hydraulic cylinder, which would cause boom to topple backwards.

I agree with wazza; next thing ya know, there will be training wheels on the remote!

If they say it is unsafe, use your ef'in head and don't do it.  How about you rely on YOUR brain instead of some computer. 

That's why everyone likes to drive old cars and trucks, they get in and there is no buzzer or warning lights telling you what your doing wrong. 

That make no sense at all. What are you saying, that you can't pump with the tip straight out?? If so, you are wrong, yo can pump it in any configuration you want to. They make the tip go 230 or some odd degrees for a reason. I pump straight out all the time when I pump, and the Charts don't say anything about keeping the tip under 90 degrees.

look clowns wasn't asking if you could do it or not just why is there safety mechanism for one prohibited boom position(ie. boom slew over non extended outriggers) and not another(ie boom tip folded back past 90 verticle).by the way not everyone aware of prohibited boom tip zone so i think was worthwhile subject and you small boom operators read ya manuel most booms have this restiction

Varies from machine to machine, so read the specs on what you are running.
I've ran mostly Putz and on some you can extend the last sections over centre as long as the hose is on the right side, even when shortrigged with OSS,
and on some you can't, and on some you can 'flip the boom' and run it backwards, IE. indoors, low height.
So read the specs and ask the manufacturer if in doubt.
