Just curious on how you all keep warm in the winter.. I know the basics, insulated bibs, boots, wool socks, big coat, but how you stay warm.. Even though I may layer my self to no end, I always get cold, feet and hands, then my face is usually the next.. Any keep warm tricks??

I have found that on top of being dressed for the weather the best thing to do is to keep moving around. No one specific thing works best but as long as you keep the blood moving it will help keep your internal body temp up but whatever you do don't allow yourself to sweat thats the worst thing that can happen to you in the cold.

Nothing worse than the old winter shivers.

There are the standard items like the "Sorrel Caribou" or perhaps snowmobile boots.

As for gloves,see what's available for ski/snowmobile

Coveralls,I always like the 2 piece "carharrt" arctic but I have seen some use snowsuits.Choose you items well as for proper fit, loose bulky stuff has a tendecy to snag.Either case personal safety or damaging clothing is an issue.

Just some thoughts from what I have used.

We have a store called MEC, Mountian Equitment Co-op, MEC.ca I believe.  They sell suplies for people who willingly hike into the frozen mountians and other frozen terrain.  It is a little pricey but it works well.  I find that if any clothing is to tight it will get you cold.  Also CLC waterproof gloves,  I have worn them the last 2 years and they are great.  I find in -5 C. weather they are actually to warm.

Keep your hands, head and feet warm.
If you get cold there you'll freeze whatever you put on.
I use wool socks and good boots, some thin gloves and some thicker wool gloves over them so I still get the feel of the controls and a thin fleece liner for my hard hat.
Other than that it's the standard, just insulated pants and a thick jacket, with usually a tshirt under.
Works for me, even in -20C and a mild storm.

Oh, forgot to say. If you layer it on too thick you'll freeze anyway.
Gotta keep some space for the air, so the hot air can flow around and exchange the cold air.

As slow as things are staying in bed during the cold and just snuggling all day has worked for me but soon it may not when I am sleeping under a bridge. Things might pick up after the new year I hope

Go to a sporting goods store a buy a shirt hockey players wear under their equipment. A good one will cost about $40 but they draw the moisture away from your body while keeping the heat in. They work very well and I use mine all the time. Also a hooded sweatshirt is a good investment they cover the back of your neck where a toque will not, especially for those days with a cold wind from the north.

For my feet the best is the Muck Boot Arctic Sports. They are good to -20 below easily. What's really nice is you don't have to worry leaky seams and you don't need to ever oil.

hands and feet are always cold as an op.  not doing physical work,  gonna be cold.

i find the best way to stay warm being an op is to pump where it not so cold.  Everybody insolated,  not me  :)  its -25C where i was this time last year

N006  how does it stay so warm in Norway?  it -38C north of 60 in canada right now

The reason for all life in Norway is the Gulf Stream, flowing hot water from the Caribbean over the Atlantic to Norway.
Hehe, Norway has just started at 60 at continues all the way to 71 degrees north. (If you don't count Svalbard, wich is at 80 something.)
It does get cold here, mostly inland, but it's dry climate so doesn't feel as cold.
The worst place to be is at the coast in the north, where you get the wind from Siberia and Arctic....brrrrr...

I always have on my wool socks, got a pair from cabelas that work great.. I wear uninsulated red wing leather boots right now, prolly need to invest in Mucks since in the winter your feet usually get wet somehow or another.. The cold would'nt ever be that bad, but that freakin wind tears everybody up..
