Anyone ever pump grout through 4\" PVC pipe?

There is a utility line that runs crossways underneath a 1000\' wide river. The 6\" utility line is in the center of a 24\" pipe and the contractor wants to fill the void between the 6\" utility line and the 24\" pipe with 9 bag grout. Bulk heading one end and pumping it in from one end isn\'t an option the contractor will allow. So we are planning on running some type of pipe to the center of the 1000\' long, 24\" pipe. The contractor does not want steel hardline or rubber hose with steel ends inside the 24\" pipe while it\'s being filled. We were thinking of using PVC pipe, but we have never pump such a distance using PVC. Any advice? Is there another type of non-steel pipe we could use to reach the center of the 1000\' pipe?

Nope never heard of it.I like the concept of throw away system.Keep in mind the system needs to be removed,I wouldn\'t want the PVC seperating under pressure or extraction.

I have pumped a 1000\' with a p-88 through 1.25\" or so plastic well driller\'s tube. The pump didn\'t like it, but it did it, piss wet. When we were done I pumped a couple hundred gallons of water through it to clean it out.  The ends were connected with hose clamps on barb type fittings. We did this to fill an old well.

I would do it again differently.  2\" plastic tube with a little bit bigger pump.

AJ, I PUMPED A SIMILAR MIX THRU A 1000\' OF 2\'\' PVC GOING ACROSS A LAKE BUT THE PVC WAS ALL ONE PIECE. WITH NO PROBLEM.

I\'ve pumped into 80\' of vertical 4\" pvc, for ground stabilizing, A well drilling company drilled 20 holes or more 60 to 80 ft deep , we machined a coupling that would screw onto the pvc and clamp to the 4\" hose pumped very slow ...low rpms ....slow stroke....when the pvc would start to lift I shut the pump off and let the existing pressure releive....they had their crane to lift the pvc pipe I just had to raise my boom accordingly, so no lifting with my boom, over 20 holes on 2 seperate occassions and not one problem, just watch your pressure !!!!!!!

I do not think you would have a problem pumping this. A 9 bag mix should pump great, is that all cement or cement and flyash? I am presuming this will be a flowable fill which will be very wet.

I do not know what the bursting pressure is of 2 inch pvc but I do know 3 inch is 377psi but they test it to 833psi. I would not use 4 inch pvc as it would be way over kill and you are going to have to be a big fellow to push 500ft of it.

The problems I see and maybe you have this figured out can you push 500 ft of pvc into this 24 inch pipe? What are you going to do, leave the pvc in the pipe or pull it out? If you are going to pull it out you are going to make a lot of connections.

The contractor is going to have to bulk head it any way unless it runs down hill both ways so that would defiantly be the easiest way to do it in the first place.

I am presuming you would use a trailer pump for this I have never tried to go all the way down to 2 inch with a boom pump.

AJ, should be no problem, but if you really want to know you should call an outfit called PIGCO(Pacific International Grout Company)360-733-5270. They do this exact thing all day long in tunnels. They use a rotory pump 5-7 stages I recall , water and portland cement mix that goes though a foam generator so it expands your cube about 3 fold, wieght of cement to water has to be just a certain weight so foam does not collapse, it actually will lift your utillity and totally encase it in grout, mix to heavy and utility floats to top, to light and it does`nt lift at all, I do believe they are working on a job that is around 20,000 feet.. yes that right, almost 4 miles!!!! That a lot of line!!
