A company that I used to work for was thinking about going to automatic trans'. They got a lot of good information about the auto trans' market when this was all going on. I found this interesting and followed through on my own for a while. The facts at the time [x-3years ago] seemd to indicate that the auto trans' would give mileage equal to a standard trans, maybe a 'squeek' better. The payoff seemed to be the reduction of trans to tire [drive shafts, u-joints, PTO, differentials and through shafts, axles] damage. The auto trans had an edge in overall cost of maint'. This seemed to remain true until major repair to the trans was needed; the manual trans then took the lead in savings. If the auto trans was treated to regularly scheduled oil changing and filter changing and the oil was kept from overheating while in operation, the auto trans was the overall winner. Hope this helps. I always wanted to run a 32meter with a tip hose only with an auto trans. Retirement with a pay check ;~) |

theres one in our fleet, every time i hop in, left foot hits the floor, and there's buttons where there should be a stick. i laugh every time :) "im in a girls truck" haha never have been a fan of auto-trans in general and even less in a heavy vehicle. didn't like being on the brakes all the time and dont like having a computer tell me what gear to be in - new or not. I agree with bob, less wear and tear. but when it brakes, i would be hoping its still under waranty!! and ive never heard of an onsite mecanic being able to find a gear on the side of the road to limp er out of a fine or maybe even back home. when their not so new, didn't like how it clunks into PTO. to each his own though... |

I operate a 36m Putz with an automatic tranny. We are based in Western Alberta in the Rocky Mountain House area, and often head into some hilly ground near Nordegg Alberta. My dislike is that I cannot lock my differentials if I have to go through some soft ground. I'm assuming I have no diff lock because the pump is an automatic. Again, just an assumption. Fuel mileage is unbelievably great however. This past summer we traveled from Rocky Mountain House to Castor, Alberta which is aprox 223 km (139 mi) one way. Pumped a 56m3 pour (took 8 hours including clean up, small town batch plant, don't ask!!!!) and travelled back to Rocky Mountain House on a half tank of fuel. Its aprox a 400 Litre tank (just guessing of course, never had the tank dry!). It has 'decent' power for highway driving, although you learn to 'dislike' people driving 90 kph/55 mph. For actually pumping concrete this machine is perfect, and never had it wide open as of yet. So all in all, I like ours :o) |
