I am most pleased to advise you that as of Monday, November 17, 2008 Concrete Pump Operator (trade code 637C) is now a recognized apprenticeship trade in the Province of Ontario.  Application is being made to have the trade placed on the list for the Apprenticeship Tax Credit.  This is through the Ministry of Finance and may take a while.

So if you want to pump concrete using a boom pump you will have to get with the program. I hear they do have a grand father clause for those who have been pumping for a while already.

I wonder if anyone knows who the instructors are for the Canadian program and can anyone get a copy of the training material?

There may be some good, new information in there that could help us all.

I sure hope that they are going to REALLY do a comprehensive job and make us a safer industry.

And to the students;

Study like your life depended on it !

I was a trainer on pumps in chicago for local 150 for 3 years. We did the 40 hour classes in the winter. We would get about 15 guys pre 40 hour class. They were all journeymen dirt guys. The first day was telling the what the operater job was. Not just puming but doing what ever it took to get the job done. i would tell the this is one of the dirtyest jobs in our local and the second day i would have 5 guys left. The guys that stuck it out got on with pumping companies and are doing great

Local 150 has started up training guys again. I have talked to the instructor the past 2 winters and it has not changed much.

Good to hear that unions are getting back to the basics. I always thought that their greatest strength was the apprentice training program.
