Boom Down

Friday feb. 8,2008 a competitor went on a second pour 15 yds sidewalk, picked up offside outrigger why I dont know swung aroung turned over 39m then they cut the 3rd section off trying to get it back up.Then unpinned the main boom cylinder and crushed the cab. When the the pump flipped it turned all the way on its side, busted the oil pan on the motor.luckily no one was injured. When asking the manager how it happened he said \"accidents happen\".I say no stupidity happens and in this case stupidity starts at the top and it goes to the bottom. We have got to get some kind of training program for new operators this breathing and a pulse (# AdminAdministrator. Edit#) isn\'t working.  (# AdminAdministrator. Edit#) like this is why insurance companies dont want anything to do with concrete pumps,Bob we need help and in a hurry or many of innocent people will be getting hurt or killed. Its time for the manufacturers of concrete pumps to step up,but they wont the more they tear up the more we have to buy parts or new equipment. The days of if you have the money we got a pump needs to end, there should be safety training and skills training before a pump is released into the market, they all preach safety,I say put your money where your mouth is.PUT UP OR SHUTUP!

There is only one company that has an intense in depth documented training program.  We keep begging them to come down here but so far they have not showed up but they say it is under intense consideration.  From what my buddy says they are also making all \"seasoned operators\" go thru the course and documenting everything they are taught.  Also heard they are now in the process of insuring every operator is OSHA 10 Certified and before long OSHA 30.  Why are people begging Bob to do anything?   So who are these masked men you ask?  Wish I could name them but we must follow the rules of Todd and Bob.

You can name them. I think everyone who has does any safety work should be praised.

Have you had an opportunity to ask the operator why he did that?

PUDG you must be having a hell of a day I have not heard anyone call so many people stupid in one day in a long time(refer other post).

I have a little more faith in fellow man to ask some questions before calling him stupid.

Like Bob I would like to know why he lifted the out riggers. I like to think he did not lift the out riggers just to see if he could bust the oil pan when he flipped it over.

Why don’t you go ask some questions and come back and give us some real facts and maybe we can learn something from this fellows misfortune.

Contrary to some peoples beliefs (trial lawyers) there are still accidents.

pudge, i have to agree with 40667. unless you know the operator and the circumstances involved. i my self have had anear miss. i had steppef off the back step of my pump and stepped down hard onto a piece of precast from one of mixer truck. i had cracked  my ankle.this put me into a state of mild shock. i proceeded to fold the boom up leaving it hanging sraight out the passengerside of the truck. i then [in a foggy haze on the verge of vomitting] proceeded to pull in the outriggers, first on the passenger side.when i rounded the front of the truck and saw the driverside  outriggers 3 feet in the air i was stund and temp bewildered as to why. i then look up to the boom and saw that i had not laid the boom in the cradle. iwas very lucky that day. iwas able to pull out the outriggers and craidle the boom without rolling it over. i am not an idiot nor am i careless or a green operator. infact i am one of the most carefull, seasoned and respected guys in alberta. i do agree very strongly with you about better, longer and more in depth training outside of the certification course now available. just becouse you can read and write and remember the cert books long enough to pass the tests, does not make or qualify you as an operator.

I do not know the operator but do know the company sends people on pumps with little or no training, not saying its all the operators fault, maybe he didn\'t realize the consequences of his actions,I would point more to the supervision,I do think there was a lot of stupidity invloved, the operator had no physical injuries he was walking around asking landscapers, framers for a job as they were working on the truck.Accidents do happen, all or preventable, with proper training proper supervision this would not have happened, anyway you look at it stupidity was involved, maybe not politically correct, but neither am I if you dont like it dont read it.

Pudg,

I thought that you might know the guy and could give us all some good insight as to what people that find themselves in that situation are thinking (or not) as the case may be. ;~)

I DO NOT KNOW HIM BUT VISITED THE SITE WHERE THE BOOM WAS DOWN IT WAS THE WORST FLIP I\'VE EVER SEEN OTHER THAN ON THE ROAD.THE PUMP WAS COMPLETELY OVER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WITH EXHAUST STUCK IN THE GROUND.BOB I WISH I COULD\'VE TALKED TO HIM BUT HE WASN\'T THERE WHEN I WAS,IT HAD TO BE A GREEN OPERATOR,I HOPED BY POSTING ON THE WEBSITE MAYBE HE WAS A MEMBER AND COULD TELL HIS SIDE BUT NO LUCK THE COMPANY I WONT NAME BUT MET SOME OF THERE GUYS AT A ACPA SEMINAR IN NEW ORLEANS LAST YEAR,NONE HAD MORE THAN 6 MONTHS EXPERIENCE,WHEN I TRAIN A OPERATOR HE STAYS UNDER MY WING UNTIL I\'M COMFORTABLE WITH HIS ABILITY TO RUN THE PUMP IN A SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE MANNER,CAN MAKE GOOD JOBSITE ASSESSMENTS AND DECISIONS,KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE 17\' RULE,AND I STILL KEEP MY EYES ON HIM,WERE NOT PERFECT BECAUSE WERE HUMAN AND WE DO HAVE ACCIDENTS FROM TIME TO TIME THAT ARE AVOIDABLE,I\'VE HAD OUTRIGGERS PUNCH THROUGH THE GROUND WITH SERIOUS DUNNAGE UNDER THEM,I HAD ONE OF MY GUYS GET INTO A POWER LINE AND IT WAS AN ACCIDENT WHERE NO ONE WAS HURT BUT HE\'LL TELL YOU THERE WAS 3 WAYS HE COULD\'VE AVOIDED THE LINE AND STILL DONE THE JOB AND STAYED 17\' FROM IT.I KNOW ACCIDENTS HAPPEN BUT ALL ARE AVOIDABLE

for those of you that want to be safe and thereby profitable.  there is a new school opening in jan of 09 where you can get your operators/and mechanics trained by solid professional. be active, not reactive. good luck until then.

There are places/companies where people can be properly trained right now. The real problem seems to be taking that training to work with them every morning.
