Good observation. But at the same time; a good operator will have a clean truck. |

A good operator does not need to be told to keep it clean either. |

It is an American "car culture" thing. It doesn't translate into other languages or countries very well; it is hard to explain. To repaint, to factory specs and sheen, a... 47m for example, it would cost a company $15,000 to $20,000. Most pumps in other countries never get that kind of paint job when they are new. When I was in LA, Cal - the operators used to call each other and warn the people that left the yard later, where there was water on the road... seriously! They didn't want to screw up their armor-all job on the tires. Other parts of the world worry about concrete splatter and keeping the assend clean. So 'clean' is one of those relative words and concepts. |

one good reason to keep your pump clean is for the customers psychology. what i mean is, if you have a filthy shitty looking pump and it breaks down the first thing the customer thinks is " i knew that p.o.s. was gonna break on me!" and then it puts it into his head that he may call your competitor the next time your company screws up. now if your pump is clean, more often than not he thinks " shit happens". besides, how often do these guys look inside your hopper before the job? if the hopper's clean and free of build up, the plug up is on the ready-mix not you. also if i was a contractor and i saw two pumps one filthy one dirty, i'm calling the clean one to pump my job. |

image is important and keeping a clean rig is very important, clean is easier to work on,very professional, and your customers aren't wandering if the pump is going to make it through the day,a good operator keeps his truck clean |

I like a clean ride like everyone else but everytime I wash it it rains or I get sent to some mud hole. If I wax it something always breaks.....lol the no win but I too like it when you pull on site and everyone looks at the pump Yesterday I was on a site where there were 3 pumps all on the same street by far my pump was the nicest but what made this a bad scene we all had our concrete on the same road which ........ us up. what are builders thinking..... |

As johnjohnjohn said people will judge your equiptment by the condition it's in. And me personally don't won't to work in a pigpen. |

I think I would prefer an operator with a good attitude, willing to add hoses or move the pump without a problem.Or one that doesn't whine if a finisher or lab man splatters a little concrete on his truck, now if I see a guy climb up on the deck while waiting on concrete, and grease his turret, that's an operator.Shiny and whiny, not so good............ |

b-alto | 08-19-2008 | reply profile send pm notify |
I keep my hopper good and oily. The concrete doesn't stick. once a month I spray it clean. Concrete loves clean paint. Also a well greased boom isn't going to be clean. I painted my boom last spring (charcoal) It doesn't show dirt grease stains or diesel black.
Its a great color it was light grey showed every thing. I had to wash with degreaser weekly. I live in North MN lots of dirt roads, mud, snow. You SO Cal or FL pumpers got it easy. |

Mudslinger | 08-19-2008 | reply profile send pm notify |
I WHINE alot when finishers or lab guy's trash my truck!!! And I can get down right pissed off!! I work hard on every job I go on to not trash the jobsite, and do a RESPECTFUL job,and these guys throw concrete down from the 4th floor onto my truck, hell yea I'm gonna get pissed. How about I go dancing through their slab?? Or kick over their cylinders?? Too many customers people dont give a rat about equipment, just look at the trucks they drive! They treat pumps like a its a rental car! Now anyone wanna know how I really feel??!! |

I have never seen a operator that kept his pump clean and didnt grease and maintain it properly, shine and whine thats bs ,its people that are to lazy to keep their equipment up that have nasty ass pumps ,clean is the way to go,I know in some parts its harder than others we are in mud everyday and the pumps get washed daily thats part of the job no matter if we work 20 plus hrs we wash our trucks its a commitment I make and my operators make and if it aint clean you not gonna see anymore green ,if its so damn filthy how can you tell if its greased, you cant until you hear it and its to late by then |

I started out mechanic at night operator by day. So i am hardwired in the mentalityof well maintained trucks Spit and shine optional. But there is nothing prettier than a cleeenpump you get all the gaukers even the firemen look twice |

I like to pull on a job without being noticed, pour the job,and leave, without anyone remembering who placed their slab. |
