Looks to me from the rebar that he was pouring drill shafts.Drill a hole,stick in your round rebar cage and then a long treme pipe and pour it out. Maybe something got stuck...

I'm thinkin maybe the machine was not being greased properly and the metal to metal wear just wore it out. It would take a hell of alot of force to snap like that.
