A 20km trail of destruction that pulled down three sets of overhead powerlines and damaged a suspended set of traffic lights ended when the truck responsible broke down, blocking a major road last week. About 5.55am on Thursday, February 11, a concrete pump truck took the Berowra exit from the M1 motorway with its pumping boom raised. As it approached Berowra the truck hit overhead wires causing them to snap and at Windybanks Interchange it hit a suspended traffic light, breaking it. The truck then also snapped the overhead wires there. The 33-year-old driver stopped a short distance away, where he tried to lower the boom. But he was unsuccessful, according to a witness, who works for Ausgrid and had stopped behind the truck. The driver then continued driving along the Pacific Highway and took a right turn into Beaumont Rd, where he snapped another set of overhead wires. The truck then turned into a business, where the gearshift snapped, causing it to roll back and block westbound traffic on Beaumont Rd. The driver allegedly said he was taking the truck in for electrical issues to be repaired. He allegedly made admissions he was aware the boom was raised but believed it was only a small amount. RMS said penalties include a maximum fine of $10,000 for a severe overweight breach, suspension of vehicle registration and driver's licence. The owner of the vehicle may also face costs to repair damage to the infrastructure http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/the-hills/concrete-pump-truck-hits-powerlines-and-traffic-lights-with-an-extended-boom-in-berowra/news-story/dae1bf9d031643223a8bea968f05b7fd |
