COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville man was injured when the concrete truck he was driving flipped on Interstate 40 in Putnam County, closing westbound lanes for several hours Thursday evening.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says James K. Vaughan, 51, was driving a concrete mixer truck for Premiere Concrete Pumping Inc., based in La Vergne, westbound on I-40 near mile marker 280 when the truck drifted off the left side of the interstate.

Vaughan overcorrected, sending the truck back onto the roadway but causing it to roll completely over and come to a rest on its wheels on the other side of the lanes.

"He started swerving on the road, and I was going to try to get his attention," said Juanita Hurt, who witnessed the wreck. "Before I got his attention, he flipped. I just stopped to help him."

The swerving caused gouges in the road, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Vaughan, who was wearing his seatbelt, was taken by medical helicopter to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga for treatment of injuries. His condition has not been released.

Both westbound lanes were closed for nearly an hour as crews cleared the scene, and one lane remained closed until about 9 p.m., reported the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Eastbound traffic was not affected.
