We all know this was not Putzmeister fault. Just a Putzmeister concrete pump and the reason I name Putzmeister is because all the search engines will pick it up and send everyone who ever does a search for Putzmeister to my web page. I am not naming Putzmeister just to pick on them. They make a good pump and I have many friends who own them so I just wanted to set that strait. And I know they are not a sponsor of mine but that is not why this video is up. This video is up because its the only concrete pump ever filmed flipping over.

My hope is that seeing this video will make you think twice before doing this kind of set up.

Every time I see that I get the willies.Common sense says someone should have been hurt in that, thankfully not.Was there an outcome to this?

Todd 09-25-2009
reply profile send pm notify

Yes, it was a mistake, nobody got hurt. They were just trying to make the contractor happy by keeping the lanes open. It is very good nobody got hurt.

THATS FUNNY, I JUST TYPED IN PUTZMEISTER, AND YOUR PAGE DID'NT COME UP. I'D SAY ITS A BASH.

NCPumper go to youtube and type in Putzmeister and do a search when the results come up go to sort by and select newest. Than see what video comes up first.

Google takes up to a week Youtube only takes an hour or so. If you want to think I am bashing than so be it. Besides I dont think Putz minds at all, they can call me anytime.

Many 09-25-2009

The type pump is really not in question,it just made it happen sooner. It wouldn't have mattered even if a straight unit, reaching the point of no return happens to all of them.

As for bashing? This is as good as it gonna get folks. One of the best examples of what "not" to do I have seen.If this saves just one operator from doing the same thing, how can it be called bashing?

Todd 09-25-2009

If we help to save one life its worth it. I have watched this 100 times and I still see new stuff. I see the car moving out of the way when it sees the boom falling, see the guys running, she the hose man jump back and so on.

I'M NOT SAYING BASHING TOWARDS THE OPERATOR. WHY EVEN MENTION THE MANUFACTURER, IS THAT IMPORTANT. I DONT THINK THE PUMP COMPANY NOR THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE MENTIONED.

Oh,I see,it's only a question of verbage.I thought he ws only doing a disclaimer,my bad.Hey Todd, just remove Putzzz and your good to go!!

I personly think this is silly, everyone knows its not putz fault the pump flipped over. If i dont call it a putz than 1/10 of the people will see it. I want everyone to see it.

I dont think it matters if its a tractor trailer or not, you can see plane as day why it happened. Im with the one post from before when it was up that says the operator swung in so the other truck could get threw that area, and left the outrigger closed. Operator error. Nothing to do with trailer mounted or putz, or who the company was. It was probly someone in a hurry or got sidetracked and forgot. We as a whole, should use his misfortune to help us remember to stay at the side when we do the same thing he did, cos we all done it, and stay there until we can put our legs back out. WITHOUT sidetracking, without going to the roachcoach, without going to the jon. Staying focused. I learned something from this, hope everyone does. Keeping it up is a good idea.

The last time this video was posted on Youtube, it was taken down due to copyright infringement. The security company that owns the cameras that captured the video also owns the copyright to the video. Todd, they may object again, especially since your logo is being used on their copyrighted video. Just a heads up.

Yea, and Acorn is going to sue the two heros who exposed thier true colors.  Todd, dont give in to pressure, it WAS s putzmeister pump and it was 100% operator error.  Once again Todds site,Todds rules, for those who did not get that the first one-hundred times.

i think the biggest problem with the video is the awful band providing the music! hahahaha.
i'm going to say it, that job could've been done if he kept the boom between those two outriggers. if he left the main down at a 45 and used 3, 4 and 5 it could've been done. i've certainly seen worse. that said, what i see is a operator trying to prime out somewhere where a mess is acceptable. the contractor should have provided a skip pan on the deck to prime into if the operator agreed to that set up. my two cents. let the flames begin!

THERES NO TELLING TOO HOW MANY HOURS HE HAD WORKED THAT WEEK. HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN FATIGUED, WHICH WE ALL KNOW TAKES A DAMPER ON EVERY OPERATORS JUDGEMENT. LIKE I HAVE HEARD SO MANY TIMES. "IT'LL BE ALRIGHT"

good god that was an amazing video , I had to watch it 5-6 times to get the full affect . I guess this is why manufactures make pumps with 4 outriggers after all ? It was truly unbelievable no one got injured . Thanks for posting this video ,goes to show us all we can never let our guard down while working with these potentially dangerous machines.Im sure this operator will have many sleepless nights reliving this day..

NCPUMPER- there isn't that much work in so-cal for a man to be fatigued. i know from experience that there are a lot of contractors who bully you into doing unsafe stuff because pump salesmen and dispatch let them. god forbid the company loses a contractor that could cause a huge lawsuit with their short cuts. the problem is if the operator refuses he sits for a couple of days or loses his job. it's that cut throat down there. that's why that operator set up the way he did, i can guarantee it up yo 99.7%

I was once told by a mixer driver that i have the rest of my life to do it right and things like short rigging power line encroachment shows me more and more how right he was thanks for putting this back up Todd i wanted the guys i work for to see it

This is the reason putz. came up with the OSS system, shame it was not on that pump. One day it will be on all pumps in one form or another but so far I have only seen and used it on the putz. 58m. One thing for sure I bet he never does that again!!!

CAPTAIN VIC 09-27-2009
reply profile send pm notify

Josh, You need to view the video again and again. The pump turnover is 100% operator error. He swung forward of his passenger side outrigger and it would not matter if it was a straight truck or tractor-trailer rig because his driver side front outrigger was not deployed as it should have been.

Anybody who tells you different is going to tip over a boom pump just like the guy in the video.

Anyway, I am still in Nigeria and hating every minute, but there is nothing tying me to the U.S. with the economy so slow. Hope you are doing well

Later, Captain Vic in Nigeria

how and why I don't know . Make or model that is why boom charts are so important. READ THEM !!!.

what did we learn???? NO SHORT RIGGING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not the first pump we have seen roll because of short rigging. All you can do is shack your head.

Pump N00b 10-05-2009
reply profile send pm notify

Short rigging is ok as long as it's done properly and you don't move the boom into the short rigged zone.
This guy wasn't even short rigged so to speak, he did'nt even swing out the front left leg.

pumpjockey 10-05-2009
reply profile send pm notify

The cause of the flip was that the combined center of gravity of the pump plus boom moved outside the perimiter of the area defined by the outrigger feet.  PLAIN & SIMPLE.

If the truck was suspended as it is designed to be on these particular units, or if the front unswing, short-rigged outriggers foot was not even on the ground (creating only a triangular area) then disaster was only that much closer.

Has there been a report on the investigation?  that would remove all of this speculation.  Come on, if Letterman can come clean, then surely this can come out.

short legging is a part of life now days with job sites and areas becomeing tighter and tighter in some places. But limits must be aheard too to minimise the risks involved in being short legged. There was really as far as I could see in this video no reason for the operator not to have the front leg at least open on the swing at least, even if it wasnt fully extended. This may have been the differance in the pump having fallen over or as the operator probly wishes now, still standing. I mean whats more important, getting a semi in or the lives of all those guys below??, who were very lucky in this situation.  I would just like to see how they planned on standing it back up or moving it away from the site afterwards. That would have been a mission in itself.

shortrigging and booming over the dead zone, past the out rigger. big no no especially on a tractor trailer rig.

getRdone 10-08-2009
reply profile send pm notify

he should of at least opened the front left outrigger and just not extend it, especially on a boom as big as a 52m.
