Pressurized tank explodes during tennis court maintenance

Emergency crews responded to a reported explosion at Baylor's campus just after 11 a.m. today that fire officials subsequently classified as "an industrial accident."

Reports from the scene indicated that contract workers were doing what a spokesperson called "routine maintenance" at the school's Tennis Center when a tank on a concrete pumping truck exploded in a worker's face.

The name of the worker has not been released, pending notification of the family. After aid was administered on scene, an ambulance transported the victim, whose injuries were described as "traumatic" by fire officials, to Erlanger Medical Center. Other workers on the scene were visibly upset.

A Chattanooga Fire Department spokesperson called the incident an "industrial accident," though early reports were of an explosion.

A construction worker is in the hospital with a traumatic injury to his face.

Chattanooga firefighters say what was thought to be an explosion, was a malfunction on a concrete pump.

The man was rushed to the hospital.

The injured worker was working at Baylor's tennis center on Old Signal Mountain Road on Tuesday.

He was not an employee of the school, but a contracted worker.

We spoke with another construction worker near by. He says he heard the blast.

"Just two minutes afterwards, just a God-awful scream from people over there," Kenny Kempka said. "I knew someone got hurt really bad by the screaming, the intense screaming."

The condition of the injured construction worker is not known at this time.
