The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is searching for the former bookkeeper of a Mooresville company who is suspected of embezzling more than $300,000 from the business. A warrant was issued May 1 for Melissa Dawn Brown, who authorities believe is living in Seneca, South Carolina.Nicole Vinson said she and her husband, Tim, who co-owned the now-dissolved Lake Norman Concrete Pumping with partner Jason Smith, discovered the alleged theft about a year ago.Brown is accused of forging documents that allowed her to gain access to the company credit card, with which she is believed to have spent about $170,000, according to the sheriff's office. Vinson said the rest of the missing money was from forged checks that Brown allegedly wrote to herself at least once a week. The theft was discovered when Vinson took the records to a new bookkeeper as the company was being dissolved.“After the new bookkeeper looked everything over, she immediately discovered about a $90,000 discrepancy, and then we just kept uncovering it from there,” said Vinson. “It’s been a year of hell, tracking her down and compiling all of the information we needed to prove what (happened).”The sheriff’s office described Brown as being 5 foot 3 and 145 pounds with blue eyes and blondish-brown hair. The Vinsons are offering a $500 reward for information that leads to Brown’s arrest. The warrant charges Brown with embezzling an amount over $100,000, said Capt. Bill Hamby.Anyone with information on Brown is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 704-878-3180.
