Wednesday, April 26, 2006 | UPDATEMan killed in construction fall is identified By Jessie Halladayjhalladay@courier-journal.comThe Courier-JournalA worker died early Wednesday morning after he fell four stories in a construction accident. Robert Demerle, 46, of the 4200 block of Jennings Lane, died at University Hospital just before 5 a.m., said Rita Taylor, a deputy Jefferson County coroner. Demerle was working on the construction site of the Cathedral Commons, a 40-unit complex being built in the 400 block of South Second Street in conjunction with Christ Church Cathedral. Taylor said Demerle suffered fatal injuries while he was using a pump hose from a concrete mixer. The hose apparently built up too much pressure, knocking him backward and causing him to lose his balance and fall. Randy Peters, head of the board of directors for the apartment project, said Demerle was working for a subcontractor on the project. Construction on the apartments, which will also hold some commercial property, began about a year ago and is expected to be completed by August, Peters said.

This is a f ing sorry story if true. What the f is going on with hose whip if this is a true happening.Rather than adding steel pipes or other suggested ways to solve the problem ......... would it be possible to have the hose man wear a safety harness attached to the tip of the boom or some section, where at least if knocked off balance, the poor bugger maybe kept on the deck. Just a quick spark as soon as I read the posting.Again we all must be aware of this new danger to one and all.

thats a good idea until u think about the boom bounce that occurs everynow and then and the fact that not all operators actually run the boom smooth enough to maintain enough slack for this system , dont forget the boom tip weight limits ( ive seen some 300+ pound guys at the tip lol but yeah the idea has merit and could be done similar to what iron workers use , safety harnes thats some 15-20 feet long but will lock when pulled sudenlyThis message was edited by Scwg42 on 4-27-06 @ 3:30 PM

Not to derail this thred but could you amagin conecting a hose man to the boom with a safty harness?!? this would be the dumbest thing in the history of pumping when in doubt wash out.
