Decisions A Company Makes and Hard Times

First off - let me say that we are not a large company although we have had the opportunity to expand throughout the boom times many times.  However, we have always run our company as a team.  We have been in business for 16 years although I have been around the concrete business for over 30 years. We treat each and every customer as if they are the only customer that we have - regardless of whether or not they pump with us 1 time a year or 50.  We go the extra mile for each and every customer.  One customer's 3 yard pour is as important to them as that 1000 yard pour is to another. Do we ignore that 3 yard customer if we are flat out swamped?  No.  We find a way to get that pour done just as if it was a 1000.  If that pour is already scheduled - does he get cancelled to grab that 1000?  No.  He will get taken care of. Word of mouth carries for years.

Many times larger companies have come in against us.  We have never lowered our rates to compete even though we have been flat out  waylaid on pumping rates offered by them.  We haven't had to.  The level of service we have offered and the fact that we do care that the job gets done safely, correctly, on time, etc. has always come to play.  Does a contractor see us pull on the job in a $50,000 truck yet the pump needs work?  No.

As an employer - EVERY decision we make whether it be personal or not affects not only my employee but their familes.  We consider our employee's families as part of our team.  Can we go buy a new car and tell my employee that I can not afford to give him a raise?  No. Will a pump go unmaintained as we purchase toys?  No.  (Will a pump go unmaintained at all is not a factor either)

We may own the company - however we have no different needs than the employees that work for/with us.  Our satisfaction does not come from being the biggest and the baddest - it comes from knowing my customers our happy - our pumps are highly maintained - we are respected by our customers - and we are respected by our employees as much as we respect them.  They have never been asked to do something we would not get in there and do ourselves.

If we were to see a possible need to add a pump to our current pumps - how does that affect my current employees?  It's not about us - it is about ALL of us.

So in the end - the decisions we make determine how not only we but our employees get through the tough times.  And our satisfaction will come from not only us as a company being around in 10 more years but our employees being taken care of during that time - not from being known as the biggest, the most known, etc.

The decisions we make from the beginning determine the success of survival through hard times.

wow that is the exact opposite of a company i worked for in Nor-Cal. big boats and mcmansions were much more important to the owners than new pipes.

well said pumper mike i had the misfortune to be sold (ie company buyout) to a company who said they were a family company its employees were family jack **** it didnt want to maintain pumps unless they had a breakdown on the job they tried every way they could to short your hours and then said soory and paid them two weeks later but your loyalty had to be second to none. but i must say up front they would do anything to get that pump job but as i said didnt give a **** if the pump pumped the job because they would find a way to charge them anyways and not pay for lost concrete so it is nice to hear a company does the industry proud

You sound like a class act. I wish the best to you and your company. I am a true believer in the old saying "what goes around comes around" and from the way it sounds you have conducted business in a professional and respectful manner, therefore good things should come back around to you.

Right on thats a company worth getting the best guys. I like that kind of thinking like"Dont let others do what you would not do" or dont make the guys thinking they buy you every year a new porsche while they drive a 1990 pontiac.
