Today I made a mistake,yes me.As I was going through my normal routine at the washout I received a call one of my operators had forgotten a 10' trimee for a wall pour,no big deal, rite,well I told him where I was at was on his way just to stop and he could get mine,as he drove up,this is where it starts,I got my pipe brought it to him sent him on his way,well,as I was thru washing I went and got my ticket signed left the job,and left my remote on the back of the pump when it fell off a 18 wheeler smashed it beyond repair,being a veteran I should have done a walkaround before I left the job but I got out of my routine and it cost me,from now on maybe I'll be a little more conscious of my final walk around before I leave a job,and yes I feel like a TOTAL DUMBASS! |

We're all human, and we all make mistakes. Hopefully for your sake it just won't happen again. Expensive mistake |

I think that we can all learn from that mistake even though it was an expensive one. Sorry that happened!!! |

Just like roadhog i put mine on the front seat of the cab, that way before i roll out it's in eyesight. Sorry to hear it was ran over, but a minor mistake in such a dangerous line of work:( |

Sorry to hear that. Just think it could have been alot worse had you missed something else in your routine. We all get out of wack sometimes, I did it about a month ago. I pumped my hopper down, someone asked for some water, stopped got them water, then I messed up. I didnt take a couple strokes in reverse, and went to flip my prime port over and saw my life flash in front of me. It was like a rocket, port went about 10 feet in the air and concrete came flyin everywhere. If my head had been 1 more inch over I probably would have lost my face. I felt like a complete idiot, unsure how I forgot such a simple part of my routine. It just goes to show we arent perfect and when we get distracted we forget little things that can be such an expense to ourselves and others. Glad you brought this up, maybe we can get other operators admit to the mistakes they make to remind all of us how important it is to get a routine down and keep it consistant. Hope you all have a safe and fun weekend. |

For all these years you have been escaping a major problem by washing out with your remote on the deck.Never ever set the remote on anything except the front seat,period,not even during a pour.I have seen countless "experienced" operators put their remotes on decks,outriggers,the ground,you name it,hang the remote to a secure valve with a good handle.Natuarally inspect your remote strap daily for problems.Through almost 25 years of boom pumping one strap has broke on the remote box,and ironically it was the last day of the last millenium,KOW.One late afternoon about 15 years ago I had a fellow operator set his remote on the deck while washing out.He picked the boom out of the cradle about 2 ft.,and comenced to washing out.During his washout the water hose got hung up on something,he in turn yanked the water hose to staighten it out and over went the pump,flat on the drivers side.What happened was when the hose hung up,it grabbed the swing lever on the remote box,the rest is history.Nobody hurt,just feelings.. |

If it wasn't for mistakes ,we all would still be living in caves.............. |

I gotta lift the boom to get the lid open to wash out. The remote comes with me to do that. I strap it around the railing at the rear steps and drape it off the side of the pump - . I've never forgotten it - I always make a point to see it hanging in it's holster on the passenger side but for some reason if I did forget, I would see it in the mirror as I always am looking out those before I roll out. Always give yourself an 'out'. |

OK - I just remembered something. I shouldn't say never...lol My first year pumping I was running a Thomsen with a hard wire remote. I folded up the boom, put the outriggers in and moved to washout...except I didn't wind the remote up and ran over the cable...completely severing it. So...I got to spend the remainder of the day re-wiring the remote, which consisted of 6, 6 pole switches - while the other guys and the owner made fun of me for being an idiot. That episode helped 'learn' me to make sure the remote - wireless or cable - is taken care of. |

in my 20 years i had never left my remote when i leave the job i usually keep looking to my passengers side where the remote hangs to be sure its there,i just had a brain fart i guess it is a costly mistake but as much as i like to think i am i'm not perfect so i'll pump for no profit for a couple of weeks then i'll be back making money again and i do believe my remote will be safer for it,thanks to all you fellows,if i couldn't have gotten it off my chest it surely would've ruined my fathers day weekend,maybe this will help not just me in the future. |

Raymond,can't you lift the boom via the stack valve? |
||
Raymond | 06-16-2008 | reply profile send pm notify |
Bisley57- You're absolutely right. I can lift the boom with the stack valve. One small problem with that...see pic... There's 1.5" of clearance between the 'D' section and the 45 degree elbow that starts the deck pipe...and another 1.5" of clearence betwen the 'C' section pipe and the pedastal that the 'B' section sits on...and the stack valves are in a place where I'm kinda visually handicapped...sooo...I'll just stick to my routine. |
