I think most people use water I use just water unless I think there may be a problem, had trouble last time, bad clean out and etc.

You maybe should look at some of the old topics some of this has been covered.

not sure why ( especially in this current market enviroment of looking for every last dollar ) you WOULDN'T  use a primer,               costs about 2.75 per pack    and around here we charge $ 25.00              pretty much ensures a smooth prime out and another few pennies goes in you pocket !!!!!

I believe most of the companies don't / or won't supply prime packs especially with this economy. Wanting to save money by dropping the "CHEAP Insurance" Imo,This is not smart business. I recommend using prime packs of some sort on EVERY prime out.don't try to be a hero. One problem I have without using a primer is the Labor it will cost to undo the oops, not to mention your pipes may be thin.Take into consideration those two factors, and it's not worth the risk.

i use 2 bags of cement to prime pump.roll the to bags up and put them in a bucket of water when you finished pour put the 2 bags in the boom then some water followed by your sponge ball suck back bingo your boom is clear.

We get $50 to prime, we'll keep buying slick pack. One yard of grout for a job yesterday was $500; I couldn't believe it, but we needed it so the contractor had to buy it.  Our customers are happy to pay the $50 for it instead of grout.

we use bentonite to prime, we use our slick packs only if we get a crappy load. we don't charge for prime the first time but if we have to move and prime again its $20.00.

we use primer on all booms from 28m to 42m.  anything larger from 47m to 65m the contractor needs to supply a yard of grout.  first thing in the morning i feel primer should be (but does not have to be) used.  afternoon pours water is perfect because your green.  safety first.

Well the only time I use any thing other than just water is,When I have some thing other than my regular ole discharge hose on,(5to4) or a 5". If i have a steel reducer with a wall pipe or any thing on I toss about half of a pack of SKICK PACK in the hopper. Other than that just plain ole water

The only time I have ever had a problem priming is after one of our new "super pumpers" took my pump out the day before but still got it primed regardless

One thing we are all forgetting is that concrete is different throughout the country, water might work in some parts and not others.  As I said I get $50 to prime, why would I stop??? I make more money on prime than I do on the pump. Around here a yard of grout is normally $100 plus a $200 trucking charge. I don't know how it got to be $500 the other day. Looked like the concrete company got cute and called the grout "pump grout" and perhaps charged more.

You try water here with our mixes and you'll get it thru about 75% of the time we use super mud soil stabilizer a 3 gallon bucket is about 100 bucks and will last up to 2 years here its not worth trying to cut 2 cents per job,we dont charge for it but its worth it for us to supply it to much river rock around here to chance it.

I always use grout for the prime. If not provided I use orange clay and deisel to prime. I have primed out with this mixter with 300' off the end of my boom. works like a charm. But there is no sub for good ole grout.
