WHAT IS THE PROPER OIL TO RUN IN THE DRIVE UNIT-(PTO) ON A 1985 SCHWING 1200?

Speedy has a good point (as usual)

The typical problem with a PTO is not - not enough, it is too much.

The newer hyd' pumps do not seem to have the shaft seal problems of the older... say a7 pumps.

You want a gear oil, not a R&O-AW Hyd type non detergent oil for long life. Some of the sharp guys go with an 85-140w multi vis' oil and they seem to have very good luck.

As far as returning the oil to your hydraulic tank goes... why not just sweep the shop floor and throw all of the metal shavings into your hydraulic tank? A PTO generates metal shavings; if you don't believe me check the magnet attached to the drain plug.

Keep it clean and it will last a good long time. ;~)

90 weight will do just fine, as far as the running the vent off the pto box goes, i agree with bob there, schwings lack good filtration anyways that may turn out bad. But if you do have oil comming out of the vent on your pto then that is a sign of a pump going south may last a week a month or 30 years, pull the pumps clean and dry them let them hang overnight and you will know which is goin, that way you can prepare to get it replaced.

HEY: I've learned(as usual the hard way) that a steibel needs to breath to keep cool.If you let it fill with hydraulic oil it'll heat up the whole hydraulic system!! The heat build up transfers directly to the pumps. As for fluid,we use synthetic 85/140 with 25% Lucasoil stabilizer, changed twice a year!
