Guys I am trying to get my last section cylinder opened up to replace the packings and stop it from leaking I got the parts from CPS Atlanta for a 1989 Putz 32 meter I took it off the pump and carryed it to a local shop for them to fix for me but yesterday they called a said they couldn't get it a part, even put heat on the out side they had a pipe wrench with a 4 foot cheater bar and it still want move they looked all around the out side for set screws and can't find any. So next week I will carry it to a large machine shop in Nashville has anybody got any ideas that will help. |

Beat the crap out of it over the threaded section with a big hammer while the 'biggest' guy in the shop is hanging on the wrench. |

Now that heat was used on the cyl. and i'm sure nobody monitered it. Maybe the cyl walls have been compromised. Normally shocking the cyl. while putting presure on the end with wrench. good luck

Many years ago the owner of the pump company had a local hydraulic shop rebuilding cylinders for us.The operator was on a very high profile job when the accident happend.I can't remember the boom angle but the chrome shaft bent like a wet noodle. As the main started to come down (main cyl) he boomed up thinking an outrigger was sinking. This was a horror story one always hears about. The father and son team at the tip,dad died and son hurt badly. I'm still friends with the operator (30 yrs) and he still is haunted. They sent the cylinder as far as Germany for testing, nothing found,an act of god was the determination. Now there a rumor of schedual 40 boom pipe (ruter to tooter) which probably overloaded the boom.Do as one wishes, that was his accident. |

we have just had the same problem on our 36 sermac, could not get the end cap off the cylinder the engineering firm that we took it to tried everything, in the end they cut the cylinder in two and machined the remaining cylinder off the glans pack . 1 complete new cylinder later all for the sake of far to much thread lock on the end cap from new. |

We are doing the same thing(fixing seals o rings etc.) and I have found that the only way to get the cylinder loose (on a 32-44 meter elba) is to make a large spanner wrench to fit on the end of the cylinder and turn it by lifting on the end of the wrench with a forklft. then remove the pins on the ends of the cylinder take the cylinder off the truck and the end will allready be broken loose, I just spent a couple days drilling a 11" long pin x 4" round pin on the second cylinder of a 36 meter elba, bushings were shot. Used a 50 ton press welded to the side of the boom . |

What I done to start was set the rear riggers then raisedthe main boom to a vertical position then unfolded section four straight off the back end then set the main back in the saddle, then let the section four touch the ground then pulled the pin then sucked the chome rod back into the housing,I had a strap to hold the pinned end in place, then I strapped then other end and pulled the other pin with a rope we let one end down at a time that sucker is heavy around 400 lbs, I thought about welding a 4 inch square heavy wall tube on the screw off end the get a large pipe wrench and a 10 ft cheater bar and try it my self one more time. |

just ran into the same problem with a 42 meter outrigger swing cylinder. The threads are "gaulded " on the outer cylinder nut. Had to cut the can, remove the piston head, and cut the nut off from the inside. Be very careful with the cutting so you don't mess up the threads. My suggestion???? Buy or find another cylinder. I don't know why they torque those nuts so tight. |

This may be a bit late for you but maybe next time you cant get the end out...its not that hard to machine the other end of the ram on the origonal weld to open ram and access the piston nut and then pull out spear and re-assem the same way. it may sound like a long way around it but it sure beats taking half a day and sometimes ending up damaging the ram.....cutting works every time and only takes 1 hour to part and 1 hour to weld. we always try to screw out but never waste toooo much time on it we just cut. would have done 6-7 rams this way in the last 10 years.
