Why is it so hard to wear gloves ? I understand they get in the way operating ,but when you are doing work seems like it should be second nature to wear gloves, one of my operators had to get stitches and will require surgery on his thumb after cutting his hand with a knife while cutting a tarp now his gloves were in his pocket ? it just baffles me why they were in his pocket and not on his hands, now I have tons of paperwork I should be doing instead of venting,a accident investigation monday and I will find out then if it costs the company a major contract,Bob I am at a loss I preach safety constantly provide all the ppe needed and my guys arent using it all the time when they need be, I know acccidents happen but all are avoidable and its really gettin to me when carelessness is getting people hurt, I have disciplined with 3 days off without pay but I just do not know if this is gonna get the point across,in these days and these industrial jobs a cut finger is a major one, its a recordable our first one,so where do I go from here do I make an example of him or do you continue preaching and doing audits what are the disciplines without firing in these times I hate to fire someone for an accident but whatelse can I do ?

IF the gloves would have prevented the accident - and - IF the guy with the sore hand realizes that to be true - and - IF you can get him 'on board' to help spread the message; it isn't all bad.

IF any of the above IFs arent answered to the positive then you are stuck with a recordable accident that will haunt your Exp Mod for the next three years and that is that.

All you can do is try. ;~)

I can't work without gloves. Old habit, and good one I guess, from when I worked as mechanic.
Rubberized gloves for wash and other times I get in contact with mud or oil, because of my psoriasis.
Some thick all purpose when I do other kinds of work, laying line, hammering, loading stuff and what else you do.
And some thin semi wheaterproof when operating, and fingerless wool gloves above when cold.

But I understand those who DON'T use gloves, so much easier and faster to clamp without them, and so irritating to go and get the right type for the job in the cab everytime you need one.
But it's a lot nicer when your hands are clean, and your equipment and cab becomes cleaner also.

I am a bit confused by this line of thinking. There are a lot of questions to this line of thinking.

Would the hand not have been cut if it had a glove on? No guarantee there.

Are operators suppose to wear gloves 100% of the time? Not realistic how would you open the pocket knife could have cut hand opening knife.

Giving 3 days off without pay as if slicing his hand was not enough of a penalty. I would have told you to take this job and shove it.

I realize to be politically correct we can not say that an accident was not preventable but as kneerick said sometimes sht happens.

At least he wasn't running with scissors!

My guess is that the only lesson learned is to be more careful. shit happens when you are not careful.

perhaps gloves would have minimized the injury.  i hope  with his three days off, he learn the proper use of a knife.  i do not like to run the remote with gloves and there are plenty of time when i tell my self, "i wish i put my gloves on".  gloves or no gloves,  i dont put my finger where i wouldn't put my dick.  worked so far.

Well yes he hopefully learned to be more careful. I still contend that sht will happen. The only thing that can be changed is trying our best to minimize sht happening but to eliminate sht happening is not possible.

Hi guys and girls , perhaps we should take a step back and look at the type of work we do!

What im trying to say is pumping is one of the most injury prone jobs there is, ive been doing it form about 7 yrs now ive had 1 serious injury but ive had heaps of minors, theres nothing gentile about the job, gloves or no gloves, personally i rarely wear them, i find they get in the way they get caught on everything , I am careful though , i like the theory dont put your hands were you wouldnt put your dick! So true... I think all you can do is be careful at the end or the day carelesness causes accidents

   Lets see,put truck in PTO,change remote battery,boot pump up,PUT ON GLOVES,extend outriggers,place dunnage,jack truck,TAKE OFF GLOVES,pick up boom,PUT ON GLOVES,get hose and clamps,hook to boom,spray hopper,slick pac etc.,back first truck WITH GLOVES,chutes are un-foregiving,TAKE OFF GLOVES,pump 50 yards,wiggle boom,yada-yada,PUT ON GLOVES,grease back-end,continue in same manner,NEVER WASH OUT WITHOUT GLOVES.You don't walk around a jobsite barefooted,gloves should be part of your routine just as much as a hammer is......

Operating a pump with gloves takes practice, but its easily mastered! I never wore gloves until I moved to NC,where it gets cold in the winter. I'm just as smooth with them on as I was without. My winter gloves are cheap jersey gloves inside a slightly larger pair of Wells Lamont leather ones.I can still feel the sticks!

to answer a few questions, the job we are on it is a requirement to wear gloves while working, the other yes the gloves would have prevented the injury and if the outlook is sht happens then you will never be safe with that outlook, it was an accident but one that could cost us dearly in future work because he chose to ignore a safety rule, any other job I would still be concerned but I would not be as harsh but it is the plants rules he broke and knowing he chose to break a safety rule and it caused an injury is the reasoning behind the discipline wear your gloves they may be aggravating but they protect your hands, you would not grind or chip concrete without safety glasses I hope same goes for your hands

PUDG-

Does your company supply gloves as standard issue PPE?  Is it a required company policy to wear gloves?

We aren't issued gloves as it is not a PPE requirement.  We do have a few jobsites where gloves are manditory...so, what happens here?
