July 24, 2012 had one of my operators in a chemical plant go down with heat exhaustion, the Drs found that he had been dehydrating for 3-4 days , his kidneys was only working at 20%, and if he would not have went to hospital he would and might have already done permanent damage to his kidneys,or had a heat stroke, it was found that he had actually been losing fluids throughout the night while sleeping due to blood pressure medication, also he had been on a low carb diet that even made his situation worse, he had drank 200 ounces of water that day and 60 ounces of a gatorade type drink and still became dehydrated, one thing he learned is that your body cannot sustain itself on water and electrolytes, it has to have carbs and food to withstand this heat, he had worked almost 10 hours without eating anything but a few dehydrated banana chips, we are in the elements all the time and need to understand the importance of a proper diet, and ways to cool yourself down, a cool rag around your neck, cover your head to keep it out of direct sunlight, and hydrate and eat the day before. The next I was on a linepump job going downhill with 4" line and carrying line up and down this hill not to mention 4 plugs on prime, I found myself getting lightheaded, let me say I am in very good shape, still play competitive sports, and I had lost almost 5 pounds of fluid within a 4 hour period, and I am very chosey on what I eat, kind of a health freak, and I was on my way into trouble, I cooled down and finished the job , without any harm to myself, we all need to be very careful, this heat is brutal and it doesn't take long before you can be in trouble. So please be safe , any slab can be repoured, any pump can be cleaned, no life can be replaced once its lost ! |

Great post indeed. I know a lot of operators and contractors that don't seem to hydrate enough when it hot out. Myself, I have 6 1liter bottles that I keep in my lunch kit and drink all of them and if not more in a day. |
