Yeap, another victim of shortrigging, happened Fri. morning. Nobody was hurt, maybe some egos. |
||
pumpjockey | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
My first thought was: 70M, but there aren't enough axles. Some other trailer-boom Putz. 52M? 46m? Short-rigged for sure. Short-rigging is like fighting terrorism, the operator has to be right 100% of the time, 'cause gravity is always there, waiting to kick your ass!! |

52 tractor trailer. |

biged | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
Why are so many booms getting flipped over this one looked to be on solid rigging why would anybody short rig on that size of pump. |
||
bigstick | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
Total lack of experience, no excuse to ever turn over a pump on hard ground, bet the guy has been running this size pump less than three months. I've personally witnessed operators with less than six months experience operating fifty-two and above pumps. You Can't Fix Stupid. As long as owners allow this kind of shit to continue this will be the result. |
||
pumpjockey | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more of the dirty side of concrete pumps, with the cheap pumps out of the Ritchies sales. More noobs than ever. Boom parties galore too!! And lets not forget - hose whipping. |

Thanks pudg Yes,it pains me to see such things.Be nice if we got some word on cause,not speculation. |

pudg | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
I am with you pumpjockey this will be a common occurrence for the next couple of years, I ran a 58 and its hard to shake me up and I am not scared of any size pump but I never would shortrig that pump just to much machine if you had a brain fart , it can happen to any of us thats why the good ones take precautions to see it doesnt happen, and yep the pipe manufacturers business will most definitely be on the rise for the coming years . There should be some kind of stipulations with experience before you can run one of these 52m + machines just to much for a greenhorn to handle without much experience |
||
Step Brother | 06-29-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
I was one of those greenhorns on a big boom. I was lucky the good Lord was always watching over me. Trained on a 42 for a few weeks, got a 28 for 3 weeks, than a 52 putz until I got on a 61 a few years later. I had 3 other operators forcing their years of experience on me every single day. One strong point was not to short rig anything over a 42. Find another way they would tell me. Using to much dunnage was is easier than an accident. Set up right and keep checking anytime you think something is feeling different. Make them let you do your job safely. tailgate meetings help, but for me it was just having guys that wanted me to be good. I sure hope ya'll are wrong about more and more accidents to come in the next few years. These accidents hurt us all. |

Pudge , why won´t you shortrigg that 58 M ? If a pump has a system like Schwing or Putz for shortrigging , Putz up to the 70M . And here in Sweden the insuruence ( I can´t spell it) will take the dammage of the pump if it fall ower if you use the system , not if the ground breaks.... But with a system like OSS why dont use it ? Is some one in USA using OSS or something like it ? |

Tracy | 06-30-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
I heard the operator was just setting up, had not even primed the boom. I saw other pictures I forget where thou, and nobody was hurt. Todd probably has better pics ! |
||
pudg | 06-30-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
the 58m I ran did not have oss and look at the pics thats why, I dont care about insurance I care about safety Im not gonna kill someone just because the insurance will pay for it ,thanks but no thanks |

No, no one was hurt, but angels were setting on four shoulders. 52m short rig because of traffic going by in the lane to the right. Rig set up on the left next to curb. Both passenger side outriggers extended, both driver side outriggers out 12-15 degrees. Boom extended about 25 degrees off center of front to power side. Boom stopped short and rocked fully extended. Moved about 2 degrees further to the front and rolled right rear to left front. The picture shows the rest. |

I agree pudg Least not be confused,I have done some things but knowing the equipment.I will and have told owners and contractors to pound sand (really a more colorfull discription). When an owner puts inexperience to the test they will fail every time.Thank goodness there was no injuries but I hope the ins co doesn't pay !!!!!!!!!!!. 1st pour free? I hope it gets shoved where the sun don't shine.Perhaps the city/state will really look at this.Any of you west coast guys,here's your shot "gitttttem" |

All I can say is that shortrigging is part of the job. I think this incident was probably due to lack of experience. Also, maybe not being familiar with the machine. |

No matter what the contractor wants, DON'T DO IT! Plain and simple, I dont care how many years experience a person has, if they push the envelope and this happens, they are STUPID! end of story! |

first pour for free,who does that?the one company that was famous for doin that in ca is no longer that company anymore.or giving a free lazer screed if you use their iron or free iron if you use their screed.i dont know anyone who could or would pull that off in this economy. |

You really think this guy is a great operator? Are you shitting me, if for some reason you ever have to shortrig a big overhead roll and fold pump you NEVER and did I say NEVER go past the extended pump side outrigger. There are diagrams on the side of the pump illustrating this, in your shop, and in the pump book. Even if a person cant read they can at least look at the pitcures. Dont want to sound too harsh, but when someone does something this stupid it makes our whole industry look bad. |

sorry tracy,your not the tracy i thought it was.and bigstick,he didnt go past the front outrigger on the pourside,the passenger side.a guy messes up once and all of a sudden he is a green horn has no experience and is and idiot.accidents are a part of life,just like the word it was an accident.yeah it was bad but it could of been alot worse.thank god it wasnt.and yes i ran a big boom for a long time,you dont have to tell me twice!i have been in some of the worst situations you can even imagine with just about any big boom size 52m+. you guys need to go a little lighter and find out facts first before you start name callin and company grindin.you see some pics and you are a osha investigator,i mean come on take a deep breath and see what surfaces from this.wheater you like it or not we all are in this together and do the same things,have a little respect guys! |

Should we ever get a chance to look at the video again,take a close look.I realize some here can't focus but look closely.Towards the begining of flip watch the top of the boom,it inches to the left (past point of no return).What the heck,missed that day in school? Balance 101. |

actually i didnt see the video jackson. im going off of what the operator and oiler are saying,they were there first hand.quick tryin to be such a hard ass it is what it is. |
||
HI | 07-02-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
I have the video right in front of me and I look at it everytime I want to see something so scary that you wonder why, and then ask why again without an answer. The operator said it was because the contractor told him to set up that way. No the contractor didn't. The instructions were short rig it, we need the lane open. I would have expected the operator at that point to say based on the video, there is no way in hell I am going to short rig it. It just aint going to happen. Move me down so the driver side out riggers coult be out at least half way in the right direction pointing forward. Not with both of them facing backwards at a 12 degree angle. Whose had fault when it is set up that way. |
||
Many | 07-02-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
Remember this There's only one captain of that tuna boat,not the contractor.I can short rig but under this criteria. Just the facts |

I HATE TO BE THE ONE TO PUT IT SO BOLDLY BUT THIS WAS OPERATOR ERROR ALL THE WAY!! THIS GUY WAS NOT SHORT RIGGED- HE WAS WHAT I CALL "HALF WINGED". IF HE WAS TRULY SHORT RIGGED THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. JUDGING BY THE VIDEO HE COULD HAVE TRULY SHORT RIGGED (WITH THE REAR RIGGER OPENED MORE ALSO) AND STILL SATISFIED THE CONTRACTOR WITH ALLOWING TRAFFIC TO PASS. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS HURT OR KILLED!! I MEAN IF THE CONTRACTOR TELLS US TO JUMP OFF A CLIFF !?!? RUNNING A BIG BOOM IN THIS POSITION (AS ALOT OF YOU KNOW) CAN BE DONE (ALLEY SET-UPS OBSTRUCTIONS ECT.) BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE BOOM NEVER GOES PAST THE FRONT OR REAR OUTRIGGER. IN REFERENCE TO MEMBER SINCE 1969 IF YOU CALL THIS GUY A "GREAT OPERATOR" I'D HATE TO SEE OR BE NEAR WHAT YOU CONSIDER A BAD ONE. |
||
droppinloads | 07-05-2009 | reply profile send pm notify |
he is a great operator!shit happens,its sad but it happens. all of you are talkin smack but sooner or later you will have your day,it might not be puttin one on its side but bringin it back full.just remember no matter how long you have been doin it or how great you think you are ,you will have your day!!!!!!!!! |

WOW!! SHIT HAPPENS!!-- THATS THE 2ND TIME I'VE HEARD THAT SAID IN THIS DISCUSSION. IN THIS INDUSTRY I WOULD CONSIDER "SHIT" TO BE AN ACT OF GOD MABE LIGHTING STRIKING THE BOOM WHILE YOUR BRINGING IT DOWN IN A STORM--MABE GROUND GIVING-WAY UNDER A WELL SHORED OUTRIGGER--MABE GETTIN A HOT LOAD THAT KNOW ONE SAYS ANTHING ABOUT--MABE EVEN FORGETING YOUR SANDWICHES ON A LONG DAY!! BUT HITTING POWER LINES--AND THINGS LIKE THIS!?! WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN, CALL IT WHAT IT IS "OPERATOR ERROR". I RESPECT THE FACT THAT THIS GUY MABE YOUR FRIEND, BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS. ITS TRUE, THAT KNOW MATTER HOW LONG YOU'VE BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY WERE ALL GOING TO HAVE "THOSE DAYS" BUT LETS HOPE THROUGH PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS LIKE THESE (NOT SMACK TALKIN) GUYS WILL COME AWAY WITH WHAT TO DO OR NOT TO DO IN A SIMULAR SITUATION. DOESN'T MEAN WE THINK WERE BETTER THAN ANYONE. WELL I'M ALL OUT OF PISS ON THIS ONE. BE SAFE AND SMART!. |

YOU WILL HAVE YOUR DAY!!!!!!! MARK MY WORD!!!! YOUR DAY WILL COME!!!!!!!
Its amazing how those words have become a defense for operators that have made big mistakes. Frankly, Im tired of hearing it. I wake up in the morning every freaking day telling myself that Im not going to hurt anyone today. I pay careful attention to my setups whether short rigged or not. When I plug in the turret I work my ass off to get the boom and deck blown out or in some cases remove the plug and keep going before the concrete sets. And guess what, as soon as I dont see a truck coming I kink the freaking single ended hose and start bringing it around to circulate. I listen to whatever pump I am operating and I know exactly what its saying.
I have NEVER hurt anyone with a concrete pump. I have NEVER brought one back full of concrete. Most certainly have NEVER tipped one over or hit power lines. And yes I am very proud to be able to say that and have spent every day for the last thirteen years defending the right to be able to say that.
If I wake up one morning(or night)in "full retard mode" and forget everything I know or have been taught and make a huge mistake I will own it. I will never be caught saying "$HIT HAPPENS" or tell some one else who is simply trying to make since of why the mistake happened that his "DAY IS COMING". Ill would probably quit if I havent already been fired.
You say my day is coming. I say today IS my day, not because I F'd something up but because I didn't.
Oh yeah as for your comment, something about "this is what happens when a operator is pushed to do something he doesn't want to do by a contractor" WRONG!!! This is what happens when a company doesn't make it 100% perfectly clear that they will back an operators decision based on safety "not to do it" and then make sure that they can trust their operator to make that decision responsibly. PERIOD. That is of course if this operator was in fact pushed into doing something unsafe. Which if you ask me I would rather lose my job if it came to that.
This is California. The only thing keeping this guy out of jail is the fact that no one died. And you would have us believe that he was "pushed" into doing something he didn't want to do or he thought was unsafe!!!Give me a break, really! |
