open the wash box to pratice posisioning, speed and direction. remove spacer and grab the piston with the ram. use soft hammmers. |

I have a GREAT service provider and he walked me through the mud cup shuffle over the phone. I thought about it a lot before I actually did it. Then waited for a three day weekend. I think realizing there was a lock washer on the kep valve (thanks CP.com) was the toughest part LOL. I sent you an e-mail |

If you know what you are doing you can save a lot of money.......but if you are winging it, get out the vaseline caus someone is going to give it to you! |

That is an easy job..... once you figure it out. Please don't try it by yourself. There is an old adage that goes something like: Watch one - do one - teach one. Find one of your friends that has 'taught several' to give you a hand. It is easier than losing one of yours. Many on here could 'tell' you how to change them, they would be doing you a disservice. Have someone show you, please. ;~) |

LISTEN TO BOB!!! Besides losing a hand, Losing a piston head at the bottom of your material cylinder is the next worst thing that can happen! Dont learn the hard way, as many of us have had to. If it's done properly and you follow the directions exactly it's a fairly easy job. |

GET SOME ONE TO HELP YOU ,THAT HAS DONE IT BEFORE. you can get in to all kinds of trouble. I know of at least three people with only six fingers. not trying to put you of but if it costs a few extra $$$ get some one in |

There's been 11 replies, and nobody's told this guy how to do it. See the plug that takes a 10 mm (it may be a 12mm) allen located at the top of the crossover manifold (at top of diffs). Remove that plug, and run a hose from there to the hyd. tank. Put in gear and drop the clutch, the charge pressure will bring both mud cups up to the top of waterbox. Now you just change them like normal. |

I forgot, you also have to shut the quarter turn valve on the driver cylinder, or else you won't get the driver side cylinder up high enough to change. |

Any pump 2, Did they work for the same company? What were they doing to cause a loss of fingers? Pump should not be running while changing cups and be sure the pressure is dumped. |

although I haven't had to change cups, I appreciate you explaining the mechanics of how to do it. This way I can actually walk through it in my head and see what kind of hazards are there, and the 'mechanics' of what's involved. Thanks for the answer cp1 |

thanks for the instructions.. seed thnx your e-mail had alot of info, your right when you think about it doesn't seem too complex, however i can see the danger. |

BRETTSKI what part of the country are you located, maybe I can find you some help, Like Bob said do not try it on your own it is real tough the first time but after you do a bunch it gets easier! |

cp1,by doing that the bone will be in the water box on both sides, what do you do next? |
|||||
Tracy | 02-24-2009 | reply profile send pm notify
you pull the bone out run the ram down to the cup slowly bolt it up pull it back towards water box, then use your jimmy bars and work it out the rest of the way. Then use vegtable oil lube up the piston cup and inside the cylinder push it back in reverse the steps above, it is a whole lot easier to just get someone to help you its easier to watch and learn. |

cp1 | 02-24-2009 | reply profile send pm notify
Bisley, you just take the bone out, and then you work the mud cup out by tapping all around on it with a small sledge. If it's being a bitch coming out, you can just make a bracket with two bolt holes, bolt it to the back of the piston and pry it straight out (but if it's in there that tight, you probably don't have to do the cups yet). To bolt the piston to the ram w/o the bone like Tracy says, you need a tie rod with left hand thread on one side and right hand on the other. If you look you'll see what I mean, but Tracy's way won't work unless you have a cool bolt which I don't. |

Now,how do you get the new jugs in the material cans? |

Seed | 02-24-2009 | reply profile send pm notify
Tracy, A gut feeling tells me this may be how someone may loose a finger! I have heard about cp1 hose trick. I did not need it. I did the passenger side with only pressuring out and the drivers side by a quarter turn on the kep valve. My favorite part was to use a low clearance drill and a wire wheel to clean the top of the ram so when it sucks into the water box the wiper is not damaged. I also used the wheel to clean the top of the barrels! Oh and useing an 1/8 in bit to clean my wire tie holes was neat also! |

This is exactly why I would not give anyone with 0 experience instructions on how to do something dangerous like changing piston heads. There are at least two completely different methods. Using ½ of one and ½ of the other won’t get you anywhere but in trouble. I have seen guys destroy a chrome rod by doing this wrong. Lots and lots of piston heads end up at the bottom of a material cylinder with nothing attached to them. Fingers can be cut off, hands broken and mangled; it is only easy if you know how to do it. Just stop and reread the entire post. Now feature yourself trying to separate the truth from the bull shit. This is just like giving a kid a can of gas and a lighter and telling him to be careful. It is not because the kid is stupid that he gets hurt; it is because he doesn’t know ALL of the rules. Knowing half of the rules is more dangerous than not knowing a damn thing. Watch/help someone do it once. That is a sure way to have two hands to operate your pump next week. I DO NOT think you are dumb for getting help. I think it shows good judgment. Whatever way you decide to go, please be careful.

It was Waaay too much typing for me! My two fingers would've cramped up by now. Besides I had to learn this lesson like most others..The Hard Way! Which lead to a lost piston head, at the bottom of the cylinder, at 7:00pm and an 8:00am job the next morning! Dude, If there's no one that can help you do this the first time, either wait until you do have some help or at least get someone on the phone to talk you through it if you get stuck or forget something. It's alot to remember and all it takes is a split second to get hurt or get all phuct up! However, if you really HAVE to? Write down the instructions that were posted above (word for word) and go over it in your head a few times before you even drain the water box. Keep your remote box close incase you need to hit the E-stop or the kill switch but make sure the boom is switched OFF! |

seed I know one of the guys was changing the heads on an old schwing.one with the long manual lever that stuck up an he lent on it , as his fingers where around the piston head. another operator had a piston head come off on site and tried to fix it him self to save a two hour drive to the work shop to fix it ,he lost fingers and a lot of skin off his arm |
