We had 720 - basicly a 740 without the boom and a thing we called the beast, it was a pull behind unit and when you got to the job you had to skid it off of the trailer with a hyd' cylinder. It was a riot in the mud.

They all had the "works in a drawer" electrical system.

Seems funny now ;~)

Bob: Same here! Dads partner was sick one day. He NEEDED that pump! So I volunteered that I'd been practicing behind his back and that I could run it. Boy did he hit the roof! My stepmom told him to shut up,and to send me out. Well I got sent to our toughest customer, and passed that test with flying colors! When I got back to the yard he said that if I could make that guy happy,I belonged on a boom! So I inherited that pump . It is a 740C with reed switches and 6-71 Detroit! It would pull hills and stumps and a bitch to learn how to shift! It was only introduced to the clutch in 1st and reverse!

The one I ran was on a P O S GMC cabover with a toro-flow [toroflush] 2 horse power diesel. It wouldn't climb a curb.............. and it had hydraulic brakes!!!

I remember the "works in a drawer" only too well ! I changed a Potter/Brumfield" and left the drawer open. 2 minutes later I blew the deck hose and filled the drawer UP! I still had 40 yds to go so I scooped it out as best I could and went back to work! It took me 9 hours clean it out and get it working again!

Yea Bob,If only the greenhorns had to run a old Thompsen or Whiteman would they realize just how good they have really got it!

Bob 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

I finally said f it and put in new terminal strips, wires and relay bases and ran it for a couple of years trouble free. I loved that pump........ first boom is like your first girl, you only remember the good stuff except the time the magnet came loose from the pistonhead. That was a rookie stumper for sure.

any of you "seasoned" timers run a whiteman boom pump??

Bob 11-08-2008

My Whiteman was like a dream machine.

But yes, they might have a different attitude. Those were no backup/geterdone days

Bob 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

Whiteman went to the "B" style rollers with the fat pins and the troubles were over

Mudslinger 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

I ran a P110 Whiteman for two years. I did most everything you weren't supposed to do with a Whiteman, including flipping the boom over backwards. If you want to learn how to do dunnage, run a Whiteman in the California hills!! Mine had a polished aluminium tip section and polished aluminium wheels! And 3208 Cat with a double disc clutch that always sounded like it was going to explode at any minute!

YUP

Did yours have the rubberband drive and the swell Clark trans? And can we not forget the 2 speed rear axle.

Less used to hollar at us as we drove out of the yard

BUTTON - CLUTCH - GAS

I think I will have that on my headstone

Mudslinger 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

The mixer is the one with an "air clutch" to operate it.It was PTO driven, had a 3 speed trans w/ reverse and a chain drive all to drive the drum! And it was a Rex! We were pumping a pool deck at my Dad's!

Mudslinger 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

My Whiteman had an "upgraded" 13 speed, with a button two speed! Never used the 2 speed, didn't have to! But if you forgot where you were in the shift pattern, you HAD to stop and start all over again! I also ran a S-Tube Whiteman at the new Folsom Prison, and the same pump 15 years later at the Oakland Coulisem! But that's another story!!!

Bob 11-08-2008
reply profile send pm notify

I never had to suffer the disgrace of operating a mixer ;~)

pumps - cranes and rock crushers only

Good times good money and good bye

Thanks for the trip ;~)

ya thats about what it is. A big expensive fly rod. Ya I finally figured it out lol

sparky 11-09-2008
reply profile send pm notify

sorry pudg i started on a whiteman s tuber with a old international tractor with a screamin 671 jimmy. Had them neoprene piston cups and victolic clamps. duetz power for the pump wuth no muffler. the constant rebuilding of the hydraulic swivel fittings for the turett and general daily repairs is what me going as apump mechanic. The pump was smooth though and worked quite well when everything worked.

Mudslinger 11-09-2008
reply profile send pm notify

Those Swivel fittings were a dream though as they allowed continious rotation. No stops. You could swing the boom around and around. But if one failed you were trying to replace it overhead and sitting in a pool of hydraulic fluid! I got so covered in hyd fluid when it happened to me I stripped all the way down, took a bath in the middle of the street with dishwashing soap and COLD water and then wore a pair of dirty coveralls! Told you I'd done EVERYTHING with a Whiteman you weren't supposed to! AH the good old days...

What is the difference between a fly rod and a 63m boom?

A fly rod wont break if you put a side load on it

hey Mud was that a tutor saliba pump at oakland col?

Mudslinger 11-11-2008
reply profile send pm notify

Thin: Sure was. And it still was a piece of junk! Somebody ended up getting hurt on it,using compressed air to blow the boom! I ran it and the Morgan 105! The Morgan was the STABLEST pump Ive ever run. 6 outriggers! 4 on the corners and 2 under the hopper. They had a good idea, just couldnt make it work! I sure got hours on that job! 16 hours a day (2:30 pm to 6:30 am),5 days a week! Worked 6 months and got out of debt and then some! But,boy, did the city of Oakland take it in the shorts on that one!
