Did you know instead of using Acetylene gas for a cutting torch you can use propane?

Yes its true. It works just as well and is much cheeper and readily available. The gauge actually screws right into the tank off your gas grill. It works better if you get a different tip for the torch.

I saw a guy at the RM plant doing it.

Brian,

The gauge connection for acetylene is a left handed thread, on your propane tank ii is right handed thread. Whatever you saw on that video is a homemade contraption, and please do not copy this, this is a safety issue. The reason acetylene is used, is beacuse  can reach temps up to 5000 deg F,

If you know a litle bit about welding and cutting. You know you need acetylene for weldingand can use propane for cutting. in the cutting proces you need the gaz to reach the melting point and the oxigin to burn the steel.

I can't get the photo to post. But yes it works for cutting. I usually weld with an arc welder.

Brian propane doesn't get as hot as cutting gas no matter what always use blow back values if you ever get a gas hose on fire just turn off the Bottle never leave it burning, for heavy welding stick is best light duty get a Mig welder there are several gases you can use with a Mig.

Thanks ED, good to hear from you. If a person ever looks at the torches at a scrap yard they often have a large gas tank and i believe it is usually propane because it works and is cheaper. A good quality torch set up and tip is key. (which i need to invest in..)

Hi Big Ed and Brian. I actually started welding as a hobby a couple of yrs. ago. I have made all my form baskets for my 9' forms. Also so handy being able to built small brackets ladder rack etc. On my own time schedule is great. So far I've acquired a 250 amp mig welder, torches, cheap press, carbide chop saw.. My latest investment was a 50 ton ironworker (makes quick work with shearing, punching bending notching). Once your set up to do your own stuff you won't believe how many projects you can dream up.Terry
