line pump question

A guy called me today and asked why he kept plugging up his 2 1/2" line trying to pump 3/4" rock. I told him that with the small line it was important to have a (four times) factor - agg size to hose size, not the three everyone talks about.

He reads the board but won't post. Will you small line guys explain the reality of the situation to this guy, please. ;~)

I use 2.5" for 3/4 mixes and have trouble some times. 4" is the way you should go if you have trouble. I am fairly new at the game, and I suppose I have good mixes like speedy says. If your plugging, the mix is probably to much for your 2.5". I have even had trouble with a rocky 1/2" mix in my 2.5"... but then I have also pumped what ws called a "3/4" blend" mix through my little 2". I guess it depends on what type of mix designs and aggreates are available in your area. Hope this helps. My advice would be if in doubt, don't do it... use your bigger line.

a strait 3/4 mix is a bitch, i had to put a 3 inch line on for gradule reduction. a exposed 1/2 inch mix will not go through. we use a 3/4 x 3/8 blend that is the same as a regular 1/2 inch mix. the plant can tweek the mix and give the call letters to identify the business. if he keeps up T-boning the customer they will get someone else. OH yea JGB gave me good price on 3 inch hose. brian
