Lost my turbo yesterday

I was on my last job, a residential wall and I heard this chattering coming from my engine. Figured out that it was my turbo. Finished the job headed back to the shop, truck was running fine then hit the last stoplight, took off from that light when all hell broke loose. Mounds of black smoke made all of the cars and highway disappear. Anyway got it back to the shop, called mack and of course the didn't have it in stock (our mack dealer sucks in this town). 3-5 days standard delivery so we overnighted it. It will be in at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow and I'll put it on. Just curious has anybody lost their turbo while pumping? What does it do, can you still pump?

Your non-turbo Mack will make just about enough horse power to suck a sponge and fold the boom.

Like any other mechanical device; it probably won't fail the moment it is abused. Those cool/cold morning starts, reving the engine before the temp is normalized throughout the engine and shutting down the engine with out an idle speed cool off period are all death to turbo items. On race-cars we have accumulator activated oil pressuring systems; they should be available for truck engines as well. Having oil pressure before the engine goes to work is an engine saving program worth looking into.

And then... sometimes they just go bust anyway.

There are a few tips in my first post.

I think that the best thing that you can do is; as soon as you take delivery of your pump, new or used, is to switch to the best synthetic oil you can buy.

Here are a couple of links for you Mike. There are no guarantees in life, but a pre/post lube system stretches out the service life of an engine, and certainly of a turbo.

Well did any of the fins get into your engine?....losing the turbo can load your engine with metal...not a good thing.

Nope. It was the bearings. All fins still intact.

What was the answer?

Are you up and at it?

TURBO UPDATE...to anybody that cares. Burnt a hole in 2 intake valves and bent the others. Needs 1 new head, no piston damage though. Pretty lucky, I guess could of been alot worse.
