It STARTED out as a bit of a lark between business mates and has snowballed into a fundraising event for breast cancer research that still has Josh Oliver scratching his head about how it all happened so fast.

With only a love for speedway racing, Josh Oliver of Go Motors, whose father Chris runs Besselings of Ballina Concrete Pumping and is a sponsor, and Nick Chilcott of Southon Drilling, decided they would buy an old car, repair it and race the vehicle.

“We bought the car and approached a couple of companies in town and had our first run two weeks ago,” Mr Oliver recounted yesterday.

“We had a ball and started a Facebook page, and it's snowballed. So we decided if we can get to 500 friends we would paint the wheels pink and donate the money to the McGrath Foundation.

“From there people said they would also donate.”

So far, without even rattling the tin at the speedway, they have raised $750.

Other businesses have also helped out by donating items to ensure the battered car remains competitive.

Now officially registered with the McGrath Foundation, with stickers for the car in the post, the group of local businessmen pledge to donate any money from winning.

“Hopefully when we start winning, now that the car is also getting more competitive, we will be able to get more money through to them,” Mr Oliver said.

“We aren't out to make any money out of it, we just want to see bums on seats at the speedway and people will have one to go for because it's for a good cause.

“But I tell you, it's harder then it looks.”

Known as the Mutty Racing Team, their next race is at Grafton, followed by Lismore.
