G’day guys, just wondering what sort of certification you have to have for a concrete boom around the world? In Australia we have to have a visual inspection done every year, the company I am with also has a monthly boom check sheet, which gets fill out by the operator of the pump, but every 6 years the boom has to the have a full strip down and be crack tested, all pins replaced, and rams rebuilt, quite an expensive process, around AU$1000/meter. But you cannot get onto any major job site without a current yearly and 6 yearly certification, and even on small sites if anything bad happened your insurance would be null and void without current certification.

JONNO any "competent person" can sign of the certification, and if you ask me, if you work with the same machines every day, do your own maintenance within your limits, visual inspections frequently and document in the log book what you have seen and what has been remedied. That in any opinion, is competent.

We normally get the machines signed off every year by an engineer, which includes an pre (and post repair) NDT crack test, but seeing and experiencing how machines are tested overseas (notably Germany), the people in AUSTRALIA don't have the faintest idea!

So what we do, we have a copy of the detailed (about 10 pages) criteria for concrete pump and placing boom AND ISO 9001 and apply it to the machine. And then get independent engineer to check, sign it off for the year (you still need a stamp, signature and sticker) under their test conditions.

In saying that, if you do class yourself as a competent person and notice something strange or wrong about a machine component, it must be take off the road until fixed...period. No ignorance. Just depends where you are at as an operator and/or how pedantic you are about your machine.

BTW AUSTRALIAN 6 Year strip down is rubbish, that was introduced for machines that were imported with "NO repair/service history whatsoever". You cannot put a time for strip down an any machine, should be operating hour dependent.

AUSTRALIAN Example of not having a clue:
