Oil injection

Hey guys,

I just attended an A.C.P.A. saftey seminar, and thought I would share a potentially usefull bit of info. Personally I had thought little about hyd, oil being injected into your skin, but apperently it happens, and the bad thing is most doctors don't know how to treat it, simply because it is rare to happen, and they are not trained in it. Anyway, there is an oil injection hotline you can call if needed. These people know about it, and can instruct a doctor on treatment. the # 1-800-822-8262 or 1-309-765-4545. The john deer company runs this line, and as we all know, JD has been using hydraulics for a very long time. We as pumpers being around high press systems should be aware of this danger and now we know what do do if a line bursts next to us and that oil we rely on to do our jobs is  now in our body.

Anything under pressure has that risk.Your transition elbow, hyd lines, pressure washer,my airless paint sprayer and the list grows.

This is good, I know a fellow here that was hooking up a hyd line on a fram tractor and something slipped and he got oil injected into a finger and they had to cut some of it off, and that could be really bad if it was somewhere lower.

This hotline is specifically for oil injection. doctors are more versed on metal, cement, and aggregate injury than oil injection. We all know that working around anything under pressure there is the risk of energy release. This is more for what to do with oil injection. Honestly, how many wpuld know what to do if injected with oil (aside from going to the hospital), where as I said the doctors might not know how to help anyway. That's what this # is for.

I know someone that had it happen to them. He wrapped a rag around a blown hose and held it with his hand to keep it from spraying everywhere. He almost lost his hand, his thumb and palm are permanently swolen 2x the normal size. Is'nt there a hazard sticker now for this issue?

Ed,

This is why I brought it up. Is it possible the finger was amputated because treatment for said injury was not known. Maybe nobody knew how to treat or who to call for the proper treatment. I have this # with me on all jobs. I get injected with oil, I say get me to the hospital and call this hotline!!!

Just wanted to clarify that the nasty results only occur if the oil is shot through you're skin with pressure.  Nothing bad happens if you just get hyd. oil in a open sore.  You'd have to do like tootall's situation for the gangrene.
