With so many new innovations within our industry from radio remote in the early 80's, compact radio transmitters, ergonic boom control in late 90's to new "Follow Me" technology and price cutting wars, has the traditional boom pump hoseman lost his touch/appeal!? In many european countries pump hire generally involves an operator to set up the machine and pump concrete. It's a requirement that hoseman be supplied by the formwork company as an extra hand if required. Is this becoming a worldwide norm? Is one switched on hose/operator better than a combination of two arrogant dork operators/hosehands that continually agree to disagree?

I am not so sure about what you are trying to say, but,if I had to push the hose around and place the concrete, the finishers would probably stick a com-a-long in my side and tell me where to go.As a boom operator for about 24 years,no sales or watching pours or managerial time, actually running a boom,I always stay where I can see both hose-man and ready mix chute,if possible.Standing in the slab next to the hose-man is out of the question, although I know alot of operators that do just that. Are you trying to say a boom operator should push the hose? |

Would u want a hoseman running ur pump.i think not.As a finisher & operator i would never want to run the pump and i wouldn't want the pump operator moving my hose, visa versa.Remember, the finishers or laborers have to screed the concrete out.Do u want the finisher or laborer to clean out ur pump.Who knows what it would look and pump like on ur next job.I like to stand as close as possible to the hose man so that we can communicate. |

Communication is done by reading a hose-man,knowing and anticipating where he will go next.A good hose person makes no verbal commands, just a slight nod or look in a certain direction. The best hose person knows the limitations of what a boom can do,how fast the boom can swing or move in a certain direction, the best hose-man has operated a boom and knows........... |
