We have just renewed the annual permit for excess rear overhang and have been told the machine now much have oversize signs front and rear, drive with flashing lights on and be gps tracked by vicroads. Never had these conditions before. Anyone else in Victoria had to do this or did we get the new guy doing our permit?

You really need to know what your talking about if you dont agree with the permit conditions and plea your case (if you have one).

The laws have become national now. It is still the teething period so they start with lots of uncertainty because they are even not sure what they are enforcing due to inconsistencies in the past and will eventually sooth their regulations if the past is anything to go by.

GPS applied when one or more axles was overweight. Overside banners were used for vehicles that are over 11.0M long or more than 2.5 wide. Flashing lights should not be used over the front unless you have excess projection over the front steering axle, flashing light at the rear was never enforced but sounds logical for a boom with overhang exceeding 4.0M or as a bare minimum DOT approved red/white reflective stripes.

The GPS makes no sense for overhang which falls within the vehicle maximum length i believe it was 11.0M.  The tail swing is very debatable. The real tricky part is that not every concrete pump in dimensions and weights are identical. That means the geometry when turning can very from minumal tail swing to huge. The wheelbase, mass and tyre sizes, road friction all come into play.  The radius of the swept path test has also changed to very generous 12.5 radius on a turn from the past 11.25.

In actual fact i have seen so many inconsistencies from officers in the past was is mind boggling. The only people who showed real clarification are Ian Mond and Ron Smith. Perhaps you should voice your concern to them.

I agree pumpbo, I've always had white and red reflective stripes on the end of the boom and that was the only condition. I'm thinking as now it's changed from vice roads to the NHVR and all the staff are new it's a stuff up, I spoke to them Friday and was told if I fit the signs and theyre not needed I'll be fined up to $3000! I'm having a meeting tomorrow with them see what I really need to do and get it in writing and signed.

All sorted, meeting was useless best they could come up with was leave the machine home for a few days until they review it because they weren't sure what to do!! So I called Ian mond who originally issued the permit, he's no longer dealing with permits but went out if his way to get it all straightened out and we are good to pump the grey stuff tomorrow!

Phil, glad it all worked out! I'm curious, Did they still percevere with the GPS Or was it a mistake by the staff assuming you required it?
