Prime port

Anyone ever drill a hole in the second elbow off the hopper, then tap it and use it for a prime port?

I'm thinking of doing this on my Schwing boom pump.

I've been priming with just water or nothing (second pump of the day) for the last 9 years but on my first prime of the day if i get crap mud and the old method of a couple inches of water in the bottom of the hopper fails it leads to a stressful prime or even a rock pack in an elbow.

No i'm not asking for advice on how to prime.. just considering a way to put a small amount of water or slick ahead of the mud.

The best way to get a rock pack is to load your hopper with water and segregate the already rocky mud.

I did a hole in my 6-7 reducer than weld a 1"nut.I use a bolt as cap.I weld a bar into the bolt to form a t-handle. I prime every day with water from our 28m to my 41sx.

Sometimes ,monday morning jobs could be a little harder to prime but all depends on how you clean your boom the week before.

Just remember that any prime port reduces the life of your pipe. If you are going to customize your pipe make it somewhere you can inspect the inside to see how it's wearing. Also however you plug the port, needs to be strong enough to hold the max pressure of your pump. I know Conforms has made different things like this for people in the past. Perhaps call Conforms and have them see what they have for you.

Well i drilled a 9/16" hole in the reducing pipe and then used it to pour a liquid primer into the pipe system before the mud.

Man does it prime awesome! I only use it on the first pump of the day, but for two days now my pressure hasn't even changed on prime. Its only a small hole so i dump a half cup of slime water in then about a half gallon of water. The prime stays if front of the mud the whole way through the system.

As far as pressure on the hole plug, its very minimal. Today i just stuck a rubber plug in it.

Well a port hole isn't as great as once thought. Yes it works ok but the old method or rolling the mud in from the side of the hopper works well with out the hassle.
