I've got a question about the safety straps seen on some of the system pours a while back.  I think it was OE-3 that had to stap each piece to one another.  As a trailer pump operator, is it necessary to strap all of my system together, or is it enough to pin the clamps as I do currently?

If a particular customer wants them with straps... put em on. Is there a LAW that says that you must put straps on all your hoses? Not to the best of my knowledge.

I have had OSHA people tell me that it must be done; but when questioned, failed to find the statute.

You are required to use safety pins in all of your clamps.

Bob,

Is that the OSHA man ? LOL

Always pin your clamps, I was told that it was a new OSHA law by the customer.  I did not see anything in writing though. I do know that the customer had a lawsuit in Florida , So it is also a company wide policy for them. I didnt mind , besides their laborers hooked up the hose , clamps, and "whip checks" I just pinned them all.

I have seen a couple of court cases that have a similar aspect. Even seen a "safety professional" try and justify the straps... never seen anyone produce a written portion of the US Code that applies to any concrete pumping line that is laid on the deck.

I am always eager to learn; if anyone can show it to me I would appreciate it. Until that time I am going with

"Do whatever the customer requests, unless and until it is unsafe."  If he wants to go with excessive safety measures, GOOD

Speedy

The idea of whipchecks on that equipment makes good sense. The pressures that they deal with, and the fact that there is entrained , compressed gas in the line is scary. The oil patch always made me nervious. Like Mr. Gumps box of chocolate; you never know what you are drilling into. And let us not forget that the gas could be both poisonous and flamable. Those guys deserve their money.
