Stabber Pipes

A contractor was asking me if one could squeeze the end of a 4 "stabber pipe so it is tapered at the end? The theory is, you will be able to spread the re bar in the wall. I know stabber pipes are in the same boat as the double 90.

Seed,

“Smashing” the end of a 4” wall pipe is an effective method of getting the pipe between rebar curtains in a wall. We used to put the pipe under an outrigger (in the shop) and gradually smash the last 3 or 4 feet (a taper). You need to flip the pipe a lot while doing this or you will end up with a banana. It seems to me that when we were finished the pipe wad about 2 ½ inches at the small end.

As your boom moves in a radius you will need to twist the pipe to line up the oblong opening with the wall. I always cleaned the end of the wall pipe so that the end that went into the clamp was perfectly clean. Then you grease the end (a lot) and put on the clamp tight – tight, with out a gasket. You can wrap some polly around the clamp after you put in the safety pin. The polly needs to extend above and below the clamp so as to keep any ‘squirt’ out of the eyes and face of the hose man. I would suggest a wrap or two of duct tape above the clamp and a loose bit of tie wire below (it must swivel)  Be careful of the ends of the wire as you do not want them in anyone’s face.

Talk to the guy on the wall BEFORE you boom the pipe up to the pour. Make sure he understands that he must turn the pipe so that it is inline with the wall………… then get his feet away from the end of the pipe…… and THEN lower it into the wall.

You should have an effective tool, and if used correctly a safe pour. ;~)

Here an Idea!! We used to use 3x6"( 2 1/2" X 5"works too) rectangular thin wall tubing as a wall pipe! With a little hot persuasion and BFH we adapted a 5" stub pipe (about 2' long) & presto,a wall pipe for thin walls. Cut the ends at 45 degrees and you can finesse even the toughest rebar! Make a pipe turner in a square"J" shape to fit around your pipe and it's easily adjustable ! By the way Seed,Yes it's an automatic, and the short stubby hose is to make wall pipe more managable! Sorry for the delay, but I JUST figured out the messages! And they send me out alone with the big truck!! Sometimes I get lost just kicking the tires

Thanks for the in site! Great ideas! I will keep this in my notes and tell the job super. We will probably be trying it soon. I for some reason thought it may be dangerous and taboo. Funny thing, The super thought about this two years ago on a job I did for him.
