TIME IN HISTORY: Summer 2006

This is a true story

I remember that this was the time when, if you had a pulse, you had a job. One operator comes to mind. He was a 120 day wonder running an almost new 36Z and thinking that he was ready for a 58m; you know the type.

He struts up to the dispatch area to get his ticket for tomorrow and FEAR shoots off of him like lightning as he sees the assigned pour.

Boom + 50 feet.

He had a panic attack.

He had NEVER in ALL his VAST EXPERIENCE………….. EVER had to clamp anything but a 5” tip hose onto his jib; and that was on there when he got the pump.

I guess my point is that we need to all take the time to actually teach these folks how to do something other than ‘wiggle the boom’. What will never work is an operator training program that REQUIRES at least 6 months as a helper on a trailer pump and then at least 6 months as an operator on a trailer pump……………………. etc, etc, etc!

Now that things are slower; take the time to give your operators the training they should have had when you put them on the boom pump.

Three years from now your insurance will go down, not up.

Yeah, I remember my first line job.
I started pumping on a big project and in 4 years
and 50.000m3 I had one line job, if you count out
the underwater stuff, but that was all done with 5.5" hoses.
So it was a STEEP learning curve once I got out in
the real world and all of a sudden got
100metres+ on a weekly basis.

YOU SORRY SAP'S. Even after I got my CDL I still line pumped half the time. Stricken with fear HA, what a panzy. Try having a 9:00 job on site a 5:00! With a shoping list! 300' of 5" pipe, 4-90's, 6-45's 4-22's a hammer gate and 100' of 4" hose AND everything to make a blow-out pipe + cap and sponges. OH and a freak'n hopper full of clamps. Pack a lunch including power bars and pedialite for just before you pass-out! Wanna know the best part? Too bad I'm tell'n you anyway. Returning to the yard after kicking a$$ and taking names!!!
