An accident involving a cement truck at Restlawn Cemetery left three city workers injured Tuesday morning. At about 9:40 a.m., Newton Fire/EMS responded to a 911 call that at least two people were injured. They treated three persons, sending one person to Wesley Medical Center with a critical, but stable, head injury. “The ground was soft and the truck tipped,” said Steve Brackeen, battalion chief for Newton Fire/EMS. When the truck tipped, the concrete boom struck the city workers beneath. According to a news release from the city, street division workers were installing a new sidewalk at Restlawn Cemetery using a rented pump truck operated by Brundage-Bone Concrete Pumping. The truck’s right rear outrigger lost footing, and the truck tipped and brought the boom down on the workers. Brackeen said when fire/EMS arrived on the scene, the truck was on it’s side, and three person were injured. All three were city workers helping pour a new sidewalk at the cemetery. In addition to one person with a head injury, one worker sustained a knee injury, and another sustained a shoulder injury. The latter two were taken to Newton Medical Center, treated and released.
