Dear biker mike. I work with a lot of owners, I sell the software program pump magic. We work with over 100 pump companies and I know most of the owners. I understand you are hurting like us all. I know many a operator who can't get a job and I know many pump companies that are no longer in biz. Everyone is in surviver mode and everyone is looking at how they do biz. The only good new is things seem to be looking up for our industry. I see the money being spent for future profits. I also see more help wanted ads.

First of all you should give thanks you still have an employeer (JOB).Several times over the years we have had to take a cut or benifit reduction.I won't say it's right, however,it could help him stay around longer.Look, everything under the sun has went up and he still has to be competitive.

Sorry

A year and half ago I poured for some guys that said they were working 7 10's, I said wow lots of overtime and double time (there was a holiday in there besides sundays) they said they did not get overtime. The boss told them they should be happy they still had a job with the economy the way it was and all. I told them they were getting screwed and they should talk to L&I about back pay. That employer should ROT in hell, what a piece of excrement.

yeah not paying o/t is against the law and he should be reported, but I am in management and do my best to give my guys every hour I can, but in the end things still have to balance out, times are tough,so I dont know your owners or management team but hope they would be doing there best just to stay afloat and be as fair as possible with employees, its like this everywhere from the people Ive talked to, hang in there times are tough, hopefully we are gonna start seeing a escalation in work.

Hey Many if I have to fly upside down than I am doing my best to work hard on those things that will make me money, than I concentrate on working hard on those things that will make me money in the future and than I concentrate on possible new revenue streams. Yes we might be flying upside down but my picture looks a bit different.

Perhaps you see your boss buying a new car or living in a nice house, but just because the economy is slow or business is poor doesn't mean that he/she suddenly becomes personally poor.  They likely worked their whole life to build their personal wealth by running a profitable company, and if they did it properly they put money in their personal bank to fund the bad times (and eventually their retirement).  I can promise you that they're not paying themselves as much you're making (if anything) right now.

My dad worked enough 100+ hour weeks over the last 20 years with his concrete pumping company that it pisses me right off when someone makes a comment about the shiny car in his garage that he waited 20 years to finally restore.

Just because business is slow doesn't mean that your employer's personal life plan stops.  There's a definite gap in your thinking.  Try starting your own business sometime by selling the motor out of the car that you bought when your were 18 to fund buying some equipment.  Then come back to me 20 years later and see how you handle the critisizm when you spend some money on yourself a year or two before you retire.

Grow up and see the big picture.

I agree with that to, but you must admit its not the wizest idea to not pay your employees overtime and then buy yourself a huge new car while you already had a great car. I would wait a bit. Or just pay the overtime. Same goes for investing in new pumps. How can you say times are so bad and no one gets his overtime and no one gets a raise and then buy 2 or 3 new pumps in one year...

Owners often shout that they have worked so hard their whole life so they deserve it. I agree.. But what about a loyal employee.. What has he been doing than? Sit on his ass watching his boss work hard? You know it doesn't work like that. A lot of guys give it everything for their companie and never even come close to what the owner gets out of it.

Maybe your dad was a good boss. But I know some owners are no more than spoiled babys that I could never work for (again).
