Albert "Al" Schmidt, 65, of Riverside, the husband of Joan Andersen and father of Margaret Schmidt, died suddenly on May 8, 2013.

Mr. Schmidt was born in Baum, Germany, on Aug. 12, 1947 and immigrated to the United States in 1957. He served as an airmobile technical specialist, Grade 4, in the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969.

Returning to Chicago, Mr. Schmidt joined the Carpenters Union and worked in the construction field for many prominent construction companies for more than 40 years as a superintendent. He retired as a general superintendent.

He loved all sports, especially soccer, which he played in several leagues. He was also a great bowler and loved the outdoors.

Mr. Schmidt is also survived by his first wife, Angelika; their two sons, Kevin and Bryan; his grandchildren, Austin and Haley; his brothers-in-law, Jack (Ana), Robert (Kathleen) and James Andersen; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Helmut (Helen) and the uncle of Stephen and Erick.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 18 at the Riverside Presbyterian Church, 116 Barrypoint Road, Riverside, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flower, please donate to Margaret Schmidt's education fund. Mr. Schmidt's body was donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois.
