Wet muddy job sites

Rain in the forecast. This is when everyone needs to be sure that they have enough dunnage for the muddy conditions that will be encountered. These conditions make those “over 3 deg” set-ups more challenging. When the dirt is relatively dry the tires, when left on the ground, will usually keep the outriggers from ‘schooching’ off of the pads an inch at a time. As it gets muddier more care will needed to insure that the pads and dunnage are level and not angled so as to provide a more secure base. Often times it will be necessary to dig or scrape the muck off of the area where the pads will be set to see what you are dealing with. This is kind of a pain, but the results are well worth the effort. As I go look at the jobs you are on I see that almost everyone does a very professional job with the set-up. I just thought that a reminder could not hurt.

The trick is to distribute the load over as large an area as is feasible to reduce the load per ft/2.

Your pads are 2ftx2ft=4ft/2. If you use the dunnage under your pads you can have a 4ftx4ft= 16ft/2 or four times the area under your outrigger. This gives you four times the chance of having questionable soil support the load imposed by the outrigger.

A good job starts with a good – safe set-up; and finishes with everyone going home - unhurt. ;~)
